Ali Abdu’s father, brother and daughter have been arrested by Eritrean authorities.

His father, Abdu Ahmed Younis (87), his brother Hassen Abdu Ahmed (38) and his daughter Ciham Ali Abdu (15) are all in detention.

Abdu Ahmed and Hassen Abdu Ahmed were arrested two days ago and are presumed to be in “Carchelli.”  His daugher, who was arrested two weeks ago, is reportedly in “Glass.”

The arrest is presumably related to Ali Abdu’s decision to abandon the regime.  Ali Abdu was Eritrea’s Minister of Information until December 2012.

This is the second arrest for Abdu Ahmed Younis.  In 2001, he was arrested when he and other elders tried to mediate the feud between President Isaias Afwerki and reformists (later known as G-15.)  He was released after 4 yours.

Hassen Abdu Ahmed has been in the National Service (“Agelglot”) since the mid-1990s.

In addition to those mentioned, cousins of Ciham Ali Abdu have also been arrested and are undergoing interrogations.

It is the policy of the Eritrean regime to go after immediate family members when Eritreans abandon the regime or leave the country.
