The Story of the #BlueEritrea Flag

Today, I hope the restless would stay calm as I narrate a basic history of …

  • Acria

    Hi brother Saleh,
The history of Ethiopia, for those of us who know some of it, is a history of war: from Atse Libne Dingel to the recent Ethio-Eritrean war of 1998-2000. The wars have been fought through tribal lines and mostly dominated by the Amharas. The current ruling party of the Ethiopian parliament is dominated by the T.P.L.F. Naturally, there will be animosity towards them by the other cultures, mainly the Oromos and the Amharas. As we have noticed recently, there has been uprisings based on tribalism, especially in the Oromia region. Therefore, PM Dr. Abiy Ahmed was a timely answer to quell down these waves of uprisings.

The easiest and fastest way to quell this tribalism is by the message of love. I am all in favor of his style and speed of handling this issue. He is young, charismatic and smart leader. He has the largest number of Ethiopian supporters and is becoming very popular among Eritreans as well. I believe his Asmara visit was the ultimate testament of his speed and the unbelievable brotherly reception he got from Asmara. This is unprecedented development that happened within a span of few weeks.

This by no means will be a walk in the park. There is still racism, as you have stated in your video, against the Tigrean people. If you have heard his speech in Asmara, he had mentioned that the Tigray and the Afar people are not against Eritreans; rather, they want a peaceful relationship with the Eritrean people. Most Eritreans are with the people of Tigray; nevertheless, most of them, regardless of their political disposition, are against Weyane. Again, we need to be very careful between Weyane and the Tigrean people. This is similar the situation in Eritrea: the Eritrean people versus the Eritrean ruling party.

For peaceful relationship between Eritrea and Ethiopia to flourish, the Eritrean rulers need to establish immediately a democratic reform: establish the constitution, release political prisoners, dismantle the unpopular military conscription, invite opposition parties to participate in establishing new government. This should be easy! If PIA was eager to make friendship with former enemy, it is high time that he makes the same and meaningful gesture with all Eritreans!

      Hi Acria,
      Thanks for the note.

Just one correction: “The current ruling party of the Ethiopian parliament is dominated by the T.P.L.F.” It is not. Please research that earnestly.

      • Acria

        Hi Saleh,
Thanks Ustaz. Most definitely in the security apparatus of the country; at least, before the arrival of PM Dr. Abiy.

    Selam Abi,

By now you should have a good grasp of Tigrigna, you acting lazy like an Englishman.

Negarit 12 was the best for the serious message it comes with. I have struggled to follow the discussion here, but one things that most agree is that PM Abye is moving too fast (mantile koynu), reform does not need such a speed, unless he is trying to contain a serious uprising or is facing a serious economic or security challenges, he has plenty of time to carry out the needed adjustments.

Anyway, on the peace deal that SG talked about, a translation in Ahmaric follows:

    Selam SGJ,

Thank you for the timely advice. But, I do not think most people are listening for they are out celebrating not to the love and forgiveness of the PM Abiy is calling for, rather to the ultimate succes they have achived – hate.

As usual, what some are parroting in public – መደመር፣ ፍቅር፣ ይቅርታ is opposite to what is happening in private. It is the words they are in love not the message of the words. Other wise መንግስቱ ኃይለማሪያም and ፍቅር or ኢትዮጵያዊነት can not go together.

The grudge and humiliation in the ego of most elites was immense for the last 27 year and some were waiting like a predator ready to ambush and finally here they have found their moment.

The poison of hate is successfully instilled.

Hitler did not happen over night. Rwanda did not happen on April 7, 1994. Yugoslavia did not happen in 1995. Hate and animosity have taken its roots first. People who say that the people of tigray are not the target of the hate, at best they are naive, other wise they are waiting something to happen.

I want to hope PM Abiy succeds for the sake of Ethiopian people and beyond and God save us from him being an Ethiopian Gorbachov.

    Admassie A.

      Selam admassie
How is that being an ethiopian gorbachv is bad, gorbachv succeeded in transforming russians from communist dictatorship to relatively democratic system and prosperity. Dont assume losing some state of ussr don’t make him a loser, it was a blessing for russia losing some state, since they have a very different aspirations and mind set, it was good for russia and ethiopia will not lose more than 1 .

    Selam Abi,

It is better to get it “the summary” from the author himself, for he knows Amharic very well. I don’t want to be guilty of wrong translations. For now the highlighted pics in the video will give you some hints.

  • Amanuel Hidrat

    Selam Saleh,

Excellent reflection and excellent advice, to the young Ethiopian Prime minister. Indeed the bar of the measuring stick will be very high for the PM, taking in consideration the achievements of EPRDF so far on the ground. I wish your advice was in Amharic so as for those who consider the EPRDF as underachieving lots to be a good reminder in the center of their crises. When I say this, I have in mind Sir Amde, Abi, Mitiku, Kaddis (very rationale), Kim (who understand the achievements), Eyob…..etc. All in all, good job my friend.

    • Teodros Alem

      Selam aman h
am assuming when u say achievement u meant economic achievement? If that is what u meant, i will give the cradit based on eprdf’s members parties performance on their constituency economy progress. So based on that tplf will be one of the last party to got cradit.
The problem with u guys r , u know a little about ethiopia outside of fake news. U can’t base ur opinion on mostly fake news.

      • Amanuel Hidrat

        Selam TA,

I know Ethiopia as a student and as a worker with in the work force in the government sectors back then. I have travelled to Ethiopia under the EPRDF governing body, and I am an eye witness to the current development and achievements in Ethiopia. Second, the projects and its development was not the performance of the member parties to their constituents, but it belong to the the EPRDF central government policy. The only critic I could have for EPRDF is, they don’t open a political space for others and the rampant corruption that lead to the public uprising. That is it.

        • Teodros Alem

          Selam aman h
That is what am saying, the economic progress performance in each eprdf members constituency is different, why is that? Unless if u don’t believe in federalism, it show u there r good and bad eprdf. And the cradit have to go according to Thier performance. That is why i said what i said above.
2nd knowing ethiopia 40 years ago or knowing ethiopia 10 – 20 day vacation trip or knowing ethiopia through fake news don’t mean living the reality of ethiopia.

Hopefully the friend of the friend of the maid will tell Madam who will then tell the Tinchel. As for the Aba Gobiye he does everything by himself so it is unlikely anyone will tell him about this bideo. But if he could just see the last minute of it, and learn to say ተማሒርኩም ኣለኹም it will be enough. The መተባባዕቲ መዓዶ say visualise what you want to happen. I will keep imagining Aba Gobiye saying ተማሒርኩም ኣለኹም።

    Hayak Allah ustaz SJ,

Negarit 12 delivered unmissable message to Ethiopians. While the tortoise part of it is an all familiar routine to Eritreans, the rabbit (mantile) part of a gem to Ethiopias: official or ordinary folks all the same. As Always, the timing and choice of content are superb. Among many things I have picked a few take aways:

    1. “Land to the tiller” and where it had ended up compose to make up watershed episodes of modern Ethiopian history. By the way, the message transcended Ethiopia (as Eritrean students in college campuses at the time, we supported that cause) itself because land and its utility have alway formed the fulcrum around which the relationship between rulers and ordinary subjects in old times (citizens in modern time) had revolved. Started with land relations in feudalism.

    2. When the Ethiopian student movement raised that historic demand and slogan in 1962, Ethiopia’s peasanty relation with the imperial rule was feudal. It was never citizen-government relation; it was imperial rule-peasan (gebar) relation. loyalty to who ever sat on the throne was measured by payement of tribute (taks) in kind and money. When the ruler described submission to his rule, it was expressed in “gibr and masgeber”. Now, land to the tiller that costed much (Tilahum Yigzaw was murdered for that cause) had broken the ruler-peasant chain. As you said the Derg had no choice but accede to that demand to make their gip on power sellable to the people. They did it with a simple decree that ended what could have taken centuries of bloody struggle.

    3. The country’s Abyssinian part peasantry was impoverished and for centuries while the Menelik era annexed parts of Ethiopia were parcelled into huge absentee land owners (neftegnas and bale wiletawosh plus feudal lords like Ras Mesfin Sileshi who owned huge latifundias in Showa. In Jimma and its environs the fertile portions of land especially suitable for commercial crops such as coffee was owned by absentee land lords. I have seen with my own eyes some of them in Agaro, home district of Dr. Abiy. I saw huge coffee plantation with an Oromo peasant guard living and farming a small plot with a grass hut at the center; nothing more.

    4. I were Dr. Abiy I would take the message Negarit 12 offered serious, and would care not to let the owner of that latifundias or their grudges afflicted descendants coming back and working their way to power and claiming back those latifundias. It happened in another form in former Soviet republics.
