      Hailat,

As one who grew up in a city, no one could expect you to know the insect kingdom to this extent. But I guess, since you are a biologist that makes you eager to know the equivalent names in our Tigrigna language. Good to have you in this forum.

      • Haile S.

        Thank you Emma!

That is exactly the origin of my interest in tigrigna names of animals including insects.
Now, unless SGJ feels I am unnecessarily filling his column with undesirable insects :-), I would like you or any other Awate colleagues to describe me what ድድቛ looks like. Based on some information of its inhabitats and as a parasite, I think I got a corresponding english name for it, but not sure. There is short description of it in ተክአ’s dictionary, but I am not satisfied with it.
        Than you!

        • Amanuel Hidrat

          Selam Hailat,

If I am not wrong, I think it is from the parasite lice family known as “Pthirus pubis”.

          • Haile S.

            Emma,

Nop! ድድቛ does not live on humans or animals. It lives on soil and sucks blood when people sleep on bare ground and then drops off. I am not sure if ማእሲ is protective or not. It is not ትዃን (bed bug).

          • Amanuel Hidrat

            Selam Hailat,

The two words are not the same

            ትኻን ≠ ደድቋን

          • Haile S.

            Emma,
If you are affirming they are not the same, yes I agree they are not. If it is a question, my answer is, they are not the same, unless people confound them because ድድቛ is not as common as ትዃን and the confusion became reality for those people. If they were the same, my mom would have called the ትዃን in our house a ድድቛ.
Where is Paul? Since he was brought up in the center of ኮምብሽታቶ in Asmara, he has no idea what I am talking about:-) 🙂 :-).

          • Kaleb

            Hi Haile,
I think “ድድቛ” is probably similar to “Cutworm”. They live inside soil but they come out to eat their food. They are not parasite, I don’t think they are hostile to human beings.

            Thanks,

          • Haile S.

            Selam Kaleb,

Bingo! Great, you are there, except it sucks blood, human or animal. I am just waiting till someone who have seen it and can describe it. Have you?,
            Thanks

          • Kaleb

            Hi Haile,
Yes I have seen it when I was a kid. It is grayish to silver like color. They are fat, very soft when you touch them. If I am not mistaken they have more than 8 legs. The “ድድቛ” I know, I used to hold it on my palm for few seconds or a minute, I don’t remember any bite or sting.

            Thanks,

          • Haile S.

            Selam Kaleb,

Thanks a lot. As you said, it looks like a cutworm, but it is a maggot of a fly and sucks blood. The maggot I am thinking identical to ድድቛ is commonly known as Congo floor worm, scientific name Auchmeromyia luteola or senegalensis. The adult is a fly of the same scientific name and lives on dirt like many fly species, but its maggot (ድድቛ) lives on animal and human blood. Hyena and Aardvark (ፍሒራ) are apparently its favorites.

            HaileS,
I had that experience. I believe they are common around where animals live–dembe . The insects suck your blood snd then it become too itchy and in a day or two it produces puss . It’ so itchy and you -scratch it –and it becomes an ugly wound requiring serious medical attention. I mean penicillin

          • Haile S.

            Selam Saleh,

Yes, it is common where animals sleep, particularly where wild animals are common like in ምሕዳር, where shepherds stay.

      Hi HaileS,
What is that you just explained? Insectology 🙂
Dragon fly, gega yekhlaaley ‘[mbr, KEDANITO eyyu

As for the “insect’s eye”, nere diye basso… I heard people say that and I used it 🙂

      • Haile S.

        Saleh,
This is a news science: Oculohelminthoentomology. I will wait what others say on the naming.

        • Amanuel Hidrat

          Hailat,

Is this new science derived from Shekolokolobangeshay? It is too long name,

        • Saleh Johar

          HaileS,
And there are people who enroll in that school of ??????????moligy?

    • Amanuel Hidrat

      Selam Hailat,

Do we have dragonfly in our country, by the way? If we do, in which part of Eritrea? It is a unique fly,

      • Haile S.

        Selam Emma,

It is not ሓዊ ለይቶ (Firefly). Please google it and see images. Then you will realize that you have seen it and is everywhere in Eritrea or elsewhere. Perhaps you will tell me its tigrigna name. During childhood in Asmara, we use to collect butterflies, and at the same time we collected dragonflies to isolates the big eyes to play with their multi color refractive effects. Sorry we were terrible.
On the shekolokobangustic terminology, oculohelminthoentomology, yes it is too long. As you well know, oculo is for eye, helminth for worm and entomology for insect sciences.

        • Amanuel Hidrat

          Selam Hailat,

Actually when I googled it, from the picture, I am familiar to this insect. Unfortunately, my memory can not help me.

    • abdella

      salam Haile
      is that TEMPO OR TEMBO

      • Haile S.

        Selam Abdella,
Thank you for the suggestion. It doesn’t ring, but could be. The name we used during our city childhood is completely escaping my mind, whether it was tigrigna or italian- or arabic-derivative. But the name I am thinking of now is based on what I read (the book or article doesn’t translate or say it is) and the insect’s way of living/reproducing which goes with the name.

    • Saleh Johar

      Selam HaileS and all,
Now I am seriously looking for Abat Nefsi 🙂 Sorry, I have to interrupt your “insectology” topic 🙂

        • Saleh Johar

          Thanks Emma,
Since Haile commented on it, I had to show him the real annoying comments. I didn’t mean to expose you to the dirt but at the same time I wanted to bring it home here so that we recognize the social problems that we have. I believe ignoring such sickness will not let it disappear. We need to be aware and look for solutions Don’t tell me to ignore it because I did ignore it for decades, mostly. But now it has become an epidemic and needs serious attention.

NB: you did good as Abat Nefsi:-) thank you Emma

          • Amanuel Hidrat

            Dear Saleh,

I don’t mean to ignore them. In fact you did an excellent job on the video. That is the way to inform the public about the sick people among us. Continue your video eduction. That should be the norm of informing our people.

          • Senay Zer

Dear Saleh — I am glad you brought those comments to the front. We all know they are there, and hiding them won’t do anyone any good. It is about time we discuss them openly. There has to be an understanding that the objective is not to accuse and counter-accuse, but that the firs step in mitigating the impact of these type of bigotry and racism (they will never die out) is to expose them to ‘sun light.’ It is my observation that the discussions and reflections (although not in optimal way) around the use of the ‘A’ word toward Tigrayans has helped to curbe its abuse among Eritreans – small step, but progress nevertheless.

      • Haile S.

        Selamat Saleh,

This is not only ignorance and bigotry, but also a sickness. A person who comes with these filthy words out of nowhere, without the slightest idea of what he/she is talking about is not within normality. This person has a deep problem whose self prescribed cures is by fabricating an enemy where there is none. The biggest problem is when such apparently personal problem takes the form of a collective issue. When people subconsciously (despite themselves) feel helpless and unable to voice their true concerns, their normality shifts. I am not trying to find excuse for such poor nasty souls, but trying to understand what drives someone who can lead his life and reacts on many other occasions normally as expected, goes awry when it comes to our shared values and heritage. I know very well such people with such sentiments who take upon themselves the defence of every imaginable attack that jumps into their mind. Perhaps we have consciously and unconsciously entertained the idea of “The Eritrean field cannot accommodate more than one front” to the core of our being and individually trained ourselves to be best soldiers, and those people you mentioned coming from among us further perfected their arms going to the lingual guillotine thinking they are cutting thousand necks.
As you mentioned in your video, you have developed the perfect shield against such filth, but there are many who get deeply hurt and remain in their corners to avoid facing the evil. That is partly the reason why our communities remain quasi-uniform and socially colorless excluding our garments and the poor emblem that we wear over them.

      • Hameed Al-Arabi

        Ahlan Ustaz Saleh Johar,

These guys are not Eritreans. They are without address in Eritrea like their boss, Isaias. Surely, the dawn of Eritreans is not very near, but they don’t have eyes to see it. Such kind of insults will not stop Eritreans from their struggle. Virtuous Jebertise will always remain clean.

Isaias and his cohorts lost their valuable tool of divide and divert. Their ploys have become clear to the Eritrean people. The end of Isaias and his address-less supporters is not far.

كل عام وانت بخير الاستاذ صالح والعيد القادم انشاء الله في إرتريا
