Negarit Episode 3: Asmara University and Leba-Shay

I believe the PFDJ’s justice system is inspired by the old Abyssinian tradition of Leba-Shay. Anyone who can spell JUSTICE properly cannot possibly disagree with my assertion. And I am that sure of it. Also, I hope you will enjoy the episode and kindly like, subscribe and share it. Mainly, I am counting on the goodwill of the PFDJ members, affiliates, and their Leba-Shay crowd.

About Saleh "Gadi" Johar

Born and raised in Keren, Eritrea, now a US citizen residing in California, Mr. Saleh “Gadi” Johar is founder and publisher of awate.com. Author of Miriam was Here, Of Kings and Bandits, and Simply Echoes. Saleh is acclaimed for his wealth of experience and knowledge in the history and politics of the Horn of Africa. A prominent public speaker and a researcher specializing on the Horn of Africa, he has given many distinguished lectures and participated in numerous seminars and conferences around the world. Activism Awate.com was founded by Saleh “Gadi” Johar and is administered by the Awate Team and a group of volunteers who serve as the website’s advisory committee. The mission of awate.com is to provide Eritreans and friends of Eritrea with information that is hidden by the Eritrean regime and its surrogates; to provide a platform for information dissemination and opinion sharing; to inspire Eritreans, to embolden them into taking action, and finally, to lay the groundwork for reconciliation whose pillars are the truth. Miriam Was Here This book that was launched on August 16, 2013, is based on true stories; in writing it, Saleh has interviewed dozens of victims and eye-witnesses of Human trafficking, Eritrea, human rights, forced labor.and researched hundreds of pages of materials. The novel describes the ordeal of a nation, its youth, women and parents. It focuses on violation of human rights of the citizens and a country whose youth have become victims of slave labor, human trafficking, hostage taking, and human organ harvesting--all a result of bad governance. The main character of the story is Miriam, a young Eritrean woman; her father Zerom Bahta Hadgembes, a veteran of the struggle who resides in America and her childhood friend Senay who wanted to marry her but ended up being conscripted. Kings and Bandits Saleh “Gadi” Johar tells a powerful story that is never told: that many "child warriors" to whom we are asked to offer sympathies befitting helpless victims and hostages are actually premature adults who have made a conscious decision to stand up against brutality and oppression, and actually deserve our admiration. And that many of those whom we instinctively feel sympathetic towards, like the Ethiopian king Emperor Haile Sellassie, were actually world-class tyrants whose transgressions would normally be cases in the World Court. Simply Echoes A collection of romantic, political observations and travel poems; a reflection of the euphoric years that followed Eritrean Independence in 1991.

    This is a true story.

My cousin is one of the organizers and he was inviting me to be a guest speaker a few years ago. And I was saying “nah, that’s not my gig. I don’t do public speeches…” and he was negotiating hard and I persisted. Then he asked me what year I went to Atse Dawit because 4 of my siblings did and I said I never went. And he said “ጊስ! ሙዓፍን! Why am I inviting you? You are not even qualified!” 😂

    Dear Saleh,

Great sense of humor and *ቀዋሚ ነገር (ቁም ነገር). Besides the music (beat) in the intro is great choice!

I was thinking of the PFDJ supporters whilst watching the clip. Do you know Saleh that not only they did not develop any sense of humour in the last 30 years but they lost what there was in our society.

The reason for that seems because dictators want to live people in fear, and as someone said since the only thing that could trump fear is laughter dictators do not want their people to have a sense of humor. Humour doesn’t just make you chuckle—it makes you think and that is why dictators nurture a society that rejects any sense of humour.

So please be prepared to hear

    PS
is it ቀዋሚ ነገር or ቁም ነገር I think it is the former as it means ግልብጥብጥ ዘይብል ዘይቀያየር ዘረባ maybe our Tigrigna gurus will come up with their idea.

    • Saleh Johar

      Hi Kibrom,
Why do you deny me the right to submit “nay Taasa wereqet”? 🙂

You know, whether we like it or not, the head of state shaped=s the attitude of the nation. Did you ever see Isaias laugh or make fun at all? He hardly displays a shy smile, nay kebertie.Acting as a normal human being is beyond him. And as stoic a society as we are, we have been damaged beyond repair (I hope not) by his mannerism, and his supporters who internalized his character in that respect.

On the term, I think it is Quwuum-Neger. Something that stands on its own. The “w” has been omitted with time. Gega yekhla’aley.

Thanks for appreciating my elal bzey bun.

    Salih,

Another great episode! Just want to point out a couple of things:
    1. i think gov of er has issued a new penal code, around 2013-15 (i think). just as fyi, doesn’t change anything on the ground. also, far be it from me to defend pfdj, but surprisingly, imo, they were open about the fact that the previous penal code was adopted from the HS era.
    2. the plural of kelbi, is it akhlabat, akhalib, or kelbitat?

    Selam Saleh Johar,
Thank you for the honest and thought provoking ideas. This is the line of thought and discussion that is missing in the Eritrean society. What is worst in that in a century when information/knowledge is power, most of the young people leaving the country so young do not have the appetite for education. Instead, they chase money as if it were the air they breathe and would do anything to get it. Dignity, self respect/confidence and personal development are concepts that elude many of them. It is sad and worrying that they may not be able to contribute as much as they should in the future Democratic Eritrean. It is frustrating that many of us fail to see this as an opportunity being thrown away.
So Saleh hawey, we all need to talk about this a lot. Thank you for raising it.

  • Paulos

    Selam Ayay,

I actually feel like I have known you in person as in forever. Halfway, I completely forgot that I was watching a video. I think the trick you’re playing on us is, your frequent hand gesture and the crossed leg and of course, when you brilliantly bring stories in such a way that the punctuated time events of the then to the here and now. It feels we are in the room. Ayay, you’re gifted! God bless!

        Selam Kbur Has Ismail AA,

I can actually relate to what you just said where a close family member is married to a Kerenawi, and the guy is not only full of life but would tell you vivid stories hands down related to every corner of Eritrea. It is a blessing to say the least.

      • Saleh Johar

        Paulos and Ismail AA,
First, thank you for pumping my head, it’s already feeling like helium and I might float 🙂
On Keren, there is a theory that you have neglected–it’s a result of unemployment. A lot of time to socialize and chat. But believe me, I prefer enough to survive if I can get to meet with people. Sometimes I wish I was born in ancient Greece, where doing nothing but just talking was the way of life. People should not be forced to do what they don’t like just to survive, and survive miserably.

And Ismail, please don’t ask Saay anything on that matter. He denounced his Kerenite credentials long ago–all because of his envy of our high ratio of crazy citizens. We will meet face to face when we manage to shift the capital city of Eritrea to Keren. He will be very sorry.

        • Paulos

          Selam Ayay,

Increase in frequency in storytelling is directly proportional to increase in unemployment? That is what I call, Joharism!

          ST= k[UE]

          Where: ST is Storytelling
          k is Johar’s constant
          UE is Unemployment

          • Saleh Johar

            See Paulos,
Now you make feel handicapped. I was never interested in “Artimetik” beyond calculations 🙂 Such formulas are beyond me. We the crazy Kerenites will give you blubber and it is your role to make sense of it 🙂 Also, note that I cannot claim that discovery, it is as old as Keren itself. Acquired from the environment.

          • Paulos

            Ayay,

Till one claims the ownership of the theory, hereby Joharism enters into the realm of Economics.

The theory has limitations though. When comedy or storytelling for that matter is a nonperishable commodity and fungible in North America, in Keren, however, it has organic aspect where it is a means of making more friends.

          • Ismail AA

            Selam Dr. Paulos,
I suggest you solicit participation of your good friend xaxe to write your theory to become receptive to tools of proof.

        • Ismail AA

          Hi Saleh J.,
Here is a win-win compromise to settle the Johar-saay7 duel on keren. Mansura should be the capital. As to unemployment Adi-QeiH was worst. But it couldn’t compete with Kerenites in telling jokes.

          • saay7

            Hala Ismail:

Imagine being in a sunny island in the Pacific: blue water surrounded by lush mountains. Now, take out the lush mountains and make them rocky, barren, and squeeze them in to the center of the island. After you do that, take out all the water and just have sand. Also, turn the heat on by 10 degrees. That’s Keren: a hot island without the water. Keren Motto should be: Well, At Least We Are Not Akordet.

But seriously, it is not that I dislike Keren; it is that I think it is entirely unnecessary. My father was a very smart man and the smartest thing he did was to get the hell out of the place before he decided to have me born in Asmara, a privilege my older siblings don’t have 🙂

            saay

          • Paulos

            Sal,

Are you saying, to be born in Asmara was a privilege?

          • Admiral,

Here is a starving artist, an unemployed semi tone musician with no independence day party to go to.
A little later I will address the effects of materialism on both Eritrean youth education and the music or art in general. Ismael Mukhtar Ibrahim points to the peoples poems, songs and art during Eritrea’s war for Independence and Saleh Johar on his debut video gave a critique of the music. As far as the music is concerned I think it is due to designer singers/band and materialism.

He plays the guitar the same way I play the krar, make what you will of it:) Its hard for me to sing and play chords at the same time. It’s like that childhood game we played where you are asked to tap your head and rub your belly at the same time. Could never do it :). You might want to invite MaHmuday to join you with his guitar: warning he takes as long to tune it as Wedi tkabo does to tune his krar.

My favorite Independence Day music has Hadnet, Fassil, Aron, Abdat and Veronica. She does the impossible: a cover version of Abrars “ከምዚልካስ ናብራ ኣይኮነን”: impressive because we all know it’s impossible to sing Abrars songs. It’s happenimg Sunday May 27 in your town.

            Selam Sal,

Glad that Sheikh Abdulrahman (May he RIP) did not run away from Keren due to the mercilessness of the heat and not due to the ratio of crazies in town. I think those crazy guys were not happy for what your late father did and could have prayed to their God to let you be born under the merciful Massawa’s heat.

        Selam Abu Salah,

Our Akelguzay are known for peotic languages. The late Dr Russom and Arrart (RIP) are the product of that region. Besides they are also good in “ድጉዔ”.

In mid 1966 our Director of St Giorge Secodary school, Mr Assier (a well respected director by teachers and students), was suspect as one of the Urban political cells who support the ELF organization. He got a summon to come to the governor of Eritrea in Asmara. He didn’t chose to go to Asmara, rather he took his life to avoid the lives of others from incarceration. It was my first time to hear “ድጉዔ” during his funeral processions.

      Anta Haile!
Why do you have to expose me? honestly, I am not sure if the word is newri or not. I played it safe. Then, while criticizing the vulgarity that is overwhelming us, I didn’t want to defy my own message. Finally, such vague insertions in a such a situation are provocative and force people to think and talk about it. That is my rudimentary marketing strategy 🙂

Gn hesebelu da’a! Hasus is not newri.. it is just the equivalent of 007 🙂

      • Haile S.

        Hey Saleh,
You are absolutely right Hasus is not newri. I just elevated it to there to spice my provocation. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be provocative. As you mentioned, we should provoke thoughts when the occassion presents. Best

        Selam Saleh,

Hasus is not the vocabulary we use in the area I grew up. But I asked from the people who use it, and they told me it means ዓሻ. What other meaning does it has then?

        • Saleh Johar

          Hi Emma,
Where I grew up it is not Hasus, but Haassis and it is exactly what you mean by it. However, give credit where it is due, Emma. We are using the vocabulary created by our enlightened government. They must have passed a proclamation to that effect.

    Hayak Allah SGJ,

This episode fits well as after Iftar (fast break) encounter (sahra). Flavor of humor intersperses the scenes in balanced and entertaining way – real ዋዛ ምስ ቁምነገር if you will. The story of Empress Zewditu’s rag reminded me of Shakespeare’s play, Othelo, and the white handkerchief he gave to Desdemona as token of love, and which the wicked Iago used through Cassio’s wife to bring the end of Desdemona’s life.

Was there not other rag in the Empress’s imperial house? you rhetorically asked. But እታ ጨርቂ ክንደይ ሚስጢር ዝረኣየት ነይራ ትክውን. There could not have been any other reason. It could have had involved the issue of fidelity as Shakespeare’s Othelo was conspiratorially made to believe his Desdemona had broken fidelity.

ንሕጂ ተማሒርካ ኣለካ. Thank you Saleh, Be blessed.
