    Selam all,

    Back to Jebena

Curious enough, life goes despite the saddest news we received yesterday. Let me first reiterate my (our) condolence and sympathy to Emma regarding the thoughts he is going through. None of us can feel the emotions he & his family are absorbed in, but lets surround them and try to comfort them and most of all celebrate Dehab. Allow me to disgress (digress and transgress in one word) in my own way. Traditionally, we do this by huddling around the bereaved (I hate this word). ሓዘን become a reunion not only of people, but also of ዱካ (በርጩማ፡ ለኣቢ፡ ጆሮው ቢቆርጡት ትግርኛ ለማይሰማ) (Abi, it is one of our weirdo proverbs). If you guys happen to visit a friend in a place where at the same time there is a mourning in the neighborhood, you will will never find a sitting stool, all the ዱካ were called for service. My mothers favorite ዱካ visited houses that I never placed a foot. It was so shiny and butt varnished, certainly not my mom’s, she was so tiny and light. Thank you ኣደይ Mebrat and ኣደይ Senbetu, two of our neighbirs and her friends who liked my mothers ዱካ. Both were wives of ደናዳይ truck drivers. At that age I always wished my father was also like the husbands so that he brings us cassettas of bananas and oranges.

Talking about disgressing, I already did yesterday before the ‘event’. Poor me, cursed me, I don’t understand why I couldn’t shut my mouth and place my finger on the wrong keys. No worries, I am not going to take you there again now. No no, no way, but allow me to take you to what Saleh mentioned in reply to my blubbering. To the hollow bamboo worn by a New Guinea social group. A bamboo condom that keeps the most precious of part of Men safe from razor-sharp tall grasses, the thorns, the wind, UVs and the Evil Eye. Without delay, I thought of sharing this video, unfortunately in french only (I couldn’t find one with subtitle), showing the gracious Korowai people. The show is to take a celebrity (Zazie in this case, the Lady) without announcing where, to a place of total exotism and experience the natural living condition with the people for a week or two. You will understand just by the images. I hope Dehab watches and enjoys it from the place of her wish. By now she must have learned french. Don’t we become polyglot there?

          Hailat,
Actually, ላም is not Tigrigna, even though it is widely used.
          የበሬ-ሚስት? Very funny

          • Paulos

            ኢንጂኔረ,

In one of the ወርቂ እዝነይ ሓዝለይ ሸበጠይ ሓዝለይ moment right before the cat fight starts, I have heard calling each other ኣቲ ሰይቲ ብዕራይ before the other retorts back with sharp tangued–ኣቲ ሰይቲ ኹሎም!

          • መሃንድስ-ምዕባለ

            Very funny, Doterre!
No on can beat ሰይቲ ኹሎም! 🙂

          • Paulos

            ኢንጂኔረ,

Asmera is a fun city. I tell you. Not so much the affluent area though–as in ቲራቮሎ or ካምቦቦሎ or maybe the entire ጣባ area. Pretty much growing up in Queens or Harlem in the 30s and 40s with all the new emigre as in Irish, Italians and Jewish from Eastern Europe.

          • መሃንድስ-ምዕባለ

            Agree, Doterre!
My uncle’s [mother’s brother] lives in ካምቦቦሎ and every time I visit their house, I want to stay there, till I realize the fun I have in my neighborhood. Much lively. ን [ኣይነበረናን] ከመይ ጌረ ከም ዘምሓይሽኩዋ ‘ዶ ርኢኻ? 🙂

          • Paulos

            ኢንጂኔረ,

Growing up in a rough area could have evolutionary advantage where one’s body and mind gets exposed to competing for meager and scant resources if you will. I am sure you’ve heard of “Pica” where it was considered a Psychiatric condition when people have a compulsive behaviour of eating dirt. It is the same condition where toddlers eat dirt.

It turned out, it is not a disorder but an evolutionary adaptation where toddlers who lack supplements of vitamins and minerals in their diets essential for their bodies tend to eat dirt to compensate. And that is precisely the reason nothing happened to most of us when we consumed ሓመድ when we were growing up. And the flip side of the logic is that, those who grow up in an extra clean environment tend to suffer a lot [one of the reasons we see more cases of asthmatic patients in the Western world, for instance] when the immune system doesn’t get trained properly so to speak. A case for growing up say in ኣባ ሻውል as opposed to in ቲራቮሎ!

          • መሃንድስ-ምዕባለ

Thanks for the good laugh, Doterre.
I just told my wife about ሓመድ ምቕሓም and she is happy to hear she was not alone. She was doing that until 8th grade or so. I used to tease her that she may have consumed Pb impurities.

          • Paulos

            ኢንጂኔረ,

I may have consumed the entire Periodic Table not of course the poster but the elements. 😂.

          • Saleh Johar

            Mehandis,
The Arabic word for meat is LaHam and I belive there is a connection between Laam and LaHam as Bet Lehem or Bet LaHam in Hebrew and Arabic respectively. In Tigrinya it should be called Enda LaHmi 🙂

Be’eray in a bull in Tigrinya but BaEer in Arabic is camels. Gemel in Yemeni (also Egyptian) and Tigrinya

          • መሃንድስ-ምዕባለ

            MerHaba Saleh,
In most cases the reason I ask is to learn something new. Also you answered my question and much more.
            Thank you!

          • Paulos

            Aya Saleh,

The bigots will call you Agame if you say LaHmi because in Tigrai that is how they say it.

          • Lebam

            Hey Paulito,

You mentioned Tigrai and I in turn have to tell you about the Tigrai women I met today, Telling you she was a 10/10 is an understatement. People almost broke their necks turning around to see her gracefully walk pass them. The Kardashians plastic surgeons would stand in awe.

Nitricc would become a TPLF fanboy if he got a taste of that. 😀

          • Paulos

            Lebam,

That is probably an optical illusion, simply because that kind of knock out beauty is pretty much spread out all over Eritrea and Ethiopia as well. There is a line to that effect in the film, “Poetic Justice.”

          • Berhe Y

            Hi Pauli,

I have heard the term LaHmi and I don’t remember how and by whom, it may be from my father.

If some one said that, as per Asmarino term, they will just call him Fara.

By the way, people from Addis Abeba also have very similar characters like those from Asmara.

I was shocked when some anchor girl referred me as, Chila. I couldn’t believe, what on earth?

The other day I was watching maradona documentary, when he played for Napoli. When Napoli played those teams from the North, like Milan, man I had no idea. Our region and our countries would compare to nothing, the way they treat them, the call them, so degrading.
I think it’s common everywhere, I am sure New Yorkers have a lot of names for those from other towns.

            Berhe

          • Paulos

            Selam Berhino,

Stereotype is a human condition but more so a regrettable social construct as well. Our region is not an exception either.

I am pretty sure that anybody who would say ላሕሚ would be labeled Agame particularly in the time when we were growing up not so much the person would be taken for a ፋራ instead.

What surprised me later on was the kind of words Isaias and Monkey use where they would be taken for a typical “Agame” words. For instance, Isaias uses the word ጨለ for excellent and Monkey uses the word ወትሩ for always. I know of no any region in Eritrea where the said words are frequently used. Hailat may know and I could be wrong.

          • መሃንድስ-ምዕባለ

            Hi Doterre,
ጨለ is common in Adi Quala region.
I am telling you Eritreans do not know each other as much as they believe.
Elite Eritreans know about Europe or America than their own country.
If your family are teacher or Police men or government workers, you may have the opportunity to know what Eritrea looks like when your parents move around the country.

          • Paulos

            ኢንጂኔረ,

I didn’t know that. Please excuse my ignorance. I had a neighbor who would say ሕይ for ሕጂ and I had always thought that she was from Tigrai but it turned out she was from ዛላምበሳ or somewhere around the border not sure exactly but definitely she was from Eritrea.

And I agree with you that we don’t know each other. I don’t mean to digress but one of the positive legacies of the Italian colonialism was the extensive road construction where it rendered Eritreans know each other and get closer to each other when communication became more easier and accessible as well. If it was done properly, Sawa or the National Service would have had the same positive impact as well where Eritreans from all corners of the nation would have had the opportunity to know each other but of course Isaias used it for sinister motives and instead of building the culture and the social fabric he destroyed it instead.

          • መሃንድስ-ምዕባለ

            Doterre,
I don’t mean to make you feel bad 🙁
Not knowing doesn’t not mean anything bad. It just means not knowing. How could that be your fault?
ሕዪ is common in Adi Quala region and ህዪ is in Zala Anbesa region.
            Short story:
Numeri of Sudan was making fun similar to this and if you are Khartumino, you would say Aywa for [yes], if you are Hagereseb you make the sound similar to ንንንንጣቅ
And the journalist ask President Numieri, so you are from Khartoum and Numeri replied with ንንንንጣቅ 🙂

          • መሃንድስ-ምዕባለ

            Hi Berhe,
            Agree. It is everywhere.
Steven Colbert, the famous comedian was on 60 minutes and he was saying that the first thing he did was he tried very hard to get rid of NC accent. When they asked him why, it is a no no for the Networks to have the southern accent.
Any state with a power dictates their accent is the best. That changes over time.
No one dares ti mess with Silicon Valley’s accent. You know why by this time.

          • Saleh Johar

Berhe, I think Chilio is derogatory for blacks. I hope Abu and the other Ethiopians can explain it. But I heard people say, we have a Chillo who dies our laundry but I might be mistaken. .

          • Berhe Y

            Hi Saleh,

The word she used it “ጺላ”. I asked, what the hell it means, and she said, we call you ጺላ because when you speak you say a lot of “ሓጸ ጸጽጽጽ”. Actually it was got funny later.

            Berhe

          • Hashela

            Selam Saleh

Cattle were domesticated in today’s Iran 10,500 years ago. From there they make it to Africa through Jordan -> Palestine -> Egypt. There rest is history. In my opinion, to say ላም is not a Tigrina word is not correct. Knowing that domesticated cattle existed in our region at least since the last 7000 years, the local people ( our people) have their own nuanced terminology for every aspect of cattle. Of course, our language has a strong imprint of other Semitic languages. The link between meat and cow you are humorously trying to make is intresting but does not lead further. A link between ለበን and ላም is more telling.

          • Saleh Johar

            Hashela,
Very informative. Thank you. But I didn’t say this word predates that—I know hoe explosive such topics have become. You can safely connect a Tigrinya word with a Mayan word and be safe. Connect a word 20 miles across the Red Sea, heads heat up. I hereby declare our words do not have any connection with other cultures, they evolved on their own. That satisfies many people.

Currently I am reading a 700 page book called “ The Loom Languages”. It explains the evolution, influence and nuances of European languages. It has ample examples of Spain’s and Arabic , I wish it was about our region. But the techniques of the study is a great help to any student of such topics.

            Thanks.

          • Hashela

            Selam Saleh

With regard to the universal applicability of the technique your are reading, I fully agree. I can tell that I learned a lot about Tigrina by having a deeper understanding of German, seemingly unrelated languages.

          • Hashela

            Uncle Saleh

As a Semitic language, Tigrinya is intimately interconnected with other Semitic languages, specially Arabic. So please don’t push me in a language warrior corner I don’t belong!

          • Saleh Johar

            No Hashela,
I had no intention of pushing you to the corners of darkness. I was just sharing my frustration. Hashaa. That was not what I intended

          • Haile S.

            Selam Saleh,

Very interesting. Thank for decorticating the possible origin of words. We are used to ላም, but ላሕሚ is also tigrigna used in Eritrea as well.
You reminded me of ማይ ልሓም or ማይ ላሓም. It looks like originally a name of a river meaning a river where cows quench their thirst.

          • Hashela

            Selam Haile,

the alternative to your explanation is the following. ልሐም is a tall tree that grows in river bank. ማይ ልሓማት may refers to river (water) flanked by ልሓማት. This tree seasonally carries dark berries that tastes delicious and make your lips and tongue blue for days

          • Haile S.

            Selam Hashela,

You are absolutely right. In fact that could be the right meaning and origin. Many rivers in Eritrea have names after the dominant plants growing in the valleys they flow.

    • Hashela

    Dear Abo and all,,

Today, it is my time to explain to you all about 5D which I was mentioning it every time rarely in all posts..To remind you when I was opposing 5G was an example..I was always talking about Matrix and today is the day to start the first part of enlightenment which is (ኣብርሆት) of why we are in here in this universe,,I will go deep in this subject for next some days..

Instead of 5G, I prefer to use the brain 5D which is not dangerous but It my need more concentration and now keep following me please.

See you and you are most welcome all,,

For now you have to know only 5 pars of the mind are functioning.

The information is sent to the brain where it will be processed and combined to create a complete sensory picture of our environment.

    Eye, Ear, Tongue Nose,Hand….

    1. Sight:-
Lght and colour is detected by cells in the retina at the back of the eye.

    2. Sound:-
Hair cells in the ear move in response to specific frequencies of sound.

    3. Taste: –
Taste buds on the tongue react to salt, sour, bitter, sweet and umami tastes in our food.

    4. Smell: –
Special cells in the nose detect different chemicals in the air that we breathe in. We also detect the flavours in food as air moves from our mouth up into the back of the nasal cavity.

    5. Touch:
Various receptors in our skin can detect different types of touch, including pressure and vibrations.

The sixth sense is just that, an extrasensory perception (or ESP) beyond our five commonly recognized senses — hearing, taste, sight, smell and touch. The colloquial use of the term “sixth sense” refers to our ability to perceive something that isn’t apparently there, This is 3rd eye which will explained after some time or check by googling but then,,

      Yes…. Awate Participants,

Everything is connected… It is a natural biological process for all human beings to have the ability to evolve and to Expand Consciousness which increases levels of sentience.

Let us know that is Consciousness is also energy, and energy is Conscious; they are both interchangeable. All energy is intelligent.Everything has an energetic signature and is composed of Spectrum of Frequency arranged in form holding blueprints called Morphogenetic Fields.

Quantum Physics tells us that everything is energy and matter is not as solid as we perceive it to be. All living beings (including planets, human beings, animals, insects, plants, each blade of grass and even a grain of sand) have consciousness.

Developing Consciousness in Ascension:-Ascension is the process of connecting to our spiritual energetic intelligence and then integrating that intelligence by descending our divinity into our physical bodies. So, Ascension is actually a descension of our spiritual-energetic bodies. We are Ascending in our Consciousness but we actually are descending that intelligent energy, our Divinity, into the physical vehicle. During the stages of our Ascension, we connect with higher, more refined vibrating aspects of ourselves: Soul, Oversoul, Ascended Master identities, etc. Therefore, the Ascension is literally a Descension or collecting of those spiritual-energetic Fragments or other identities of ourselves, as we merge them into this Now moment of Self.

The term of Ascension is used hand in hand with developing consciousness, understanding consciousness as intelligent energy, participation with our Soul evolution, the many tiers of the awakening process, becoming Soul-infused benevolent and compassionate personalities on Earth. Ascension is also a literal, tangible scientific process of the evolution of Consciousness and biology within specific laws and energy mechanics that apply to a multidimensional reality system.

You maythink the 3rd dimension see, such as the house, the tree, the animal. In this dimensional context, these things are seen as part of form that which has shape, mass, texture and weight. Form is also present in the Fourth Dimension and to some degree in the Fifth. But in these higher dimensions, things are more light-filled, not as dense as they are in the Third. The Third Dimension is locked in a time/space and cause/effect or duality paradigm black and white..Just double of everything.

In the Third Dimension, life mirrors all that we are seeking to understand. Therefore, the process of creating via our thoughts and feelings is slowed down so that we can track the circumstances of what we hold in our consciousness. The Third Dimension is a state of consciousness that is very limited and restricted. Third dimensional society and science seek to prove that the only reality that exists is the one we perceive with our five physical senses and urges us to believe that our 3D perceptions of reality are the only reality. Because we’ve been living in this 3rd dimensional reality for so many lifetimes, we tend to assume that this is the only reality available to live in. The third dimensional “operating system” runs on rigid beliefs and a fairly inflexible set of rules and limitations. For example, in the Third Dimension, we learn to believe that bodies are solid; they can’t merge with each other or walk through walls. Everything is subject to gravity, physical objects cannot disappear, and we cannot read another person’s mind. There’s a solid belief that we have to “work hard” to accomplish our goals. Fear, judgment and separation from the whole are pervasive.

The Fourth Dimension:- This is the “bridge” we’re on now, and will be for a relatively short period of time. In traveling through the Fourth Dimension, we are preparing ourselves for the Fifth. Many of us have had experiences of the Fourth Dimension for a number of years now without realizing it. We’re experiencing this dimension when we have moments of spiritual awakening and experiences of heart opening. Other times, it can happen when we’re simply feeling clear and quiet inside. Everything within and around us feel lighter and less rigid. There’s a sense of spaciousness and upliftment. Time is no longer linear in the Fourth Dimension. Fourth dimensional perception of past, present and future is more fluid, as the laws of time and space change. We discover that time is malleable; they can actually stretch and condense, much to our third dimensional surprise.
Because of the fluid nature of time and space in the Fourth Dimension, our astral forms naturally morph. Hence, there is a huge mobility of form. A shaman or holy person who can shape shift has learned to ground their astral form upon the third dimension so completely that they can temporarily change their third dimensional form. Manifestation is much faster in the Fourth Dimension. Thoughts and feelings create reality much more quickly than upon the third dimension. In general, when we’re experiencing love, joy and gratitude, we’re experiencing fourth dimensional consciousness.

        The Fifth Dimension:-

All life upon the Fifth Dimension lives in the Unity Consciousness of Spirit, but there is still an experience of “I” as an individual member of the group. Linear time and space do not bind consciousness here, and there is NO illusion of separation or limitation. Instead, there is a constant experience of the Oneness of ALL. In order to enter into the Fifth Dimension and stay there, all mental and emotional baggage must be left at the door. No fear, suffering, anger, hostility, guilt or sense of separation exists there. Mastery over thought is a prerequisite.

All actions on this plane are based upon love because fear cannot survive the higher vibration of the fifth dimension. If we were to experience fear while in the Fifth Dimension, our vibration would drop and our consciousness would instantly be lowered to the lower sub-planes of the Fourth Dimension.

On the Fifth Dimension we live in unconditional love, unconditional forgiveness and unconditional acceptance. This is the higher vibrations ..

Manifestation in the Fifth Dimension is instantaneous. You think about something, it becomes present. People generally communicate through telepathy and have the ability to read each other’s thoughts and feelings with ease. The experience of time is radically different: some describe it as “everything happening at once.” There is no distinction between past, present or future.

Many of us are having experiences or dreams that feel like visits to the Fifth Dimension. These are exhilarating, tremendously exciting and hopeful. They keep us moving on through the difficulties that sometimes arise as we travel through the Fourth Dimension and into the Fifth. The Fifth Dimension is the beginning of Ascension. Hence, all consciousness there is naturally multidimensional.

            Dear Abo,

            The question is that possible.?.

How Can it Happen so Quickly?

The question might arise: How can this possibly happen? How can this world turn around from where it is today and become this utopian kind of world? There is still so much darkness on the planet—wars, hatred, prejudice and injustice. Yes Abi,,

The answer is two-fold: First, thousands of people on the planet are now experiencing an awakening of the heart at an unprecedented rate—and this awakening appears to be speeding up, as time goes by. At some point, the hundredth monkey phenomenon will inevitably take hold. And secondly, not everyone on the planet at this time is making the choice (consciously or unconsciously) to make the shift into the Fifth Dimension.

All souls have the choice to enter 5D, given they have assimilated sufficient light to hold the energy levels that exist in that higher vibration. But many will be choosing to leave the earth within the next couple of decades to move on to other third dimensional experiences in other parts of the universe. They will not have finished with what third-dimensional reality has still to teach them.

Those who are choosing to stay and make the shift with the earth will be going through some intense and rapid changes, as their bodies and minds make the radical changes needed to shift into the higher consciousness requisite for moving into the Fifth Dimension. Think and work hard,,

      Hi Lebam,

Thank you for sharing. But interacting how one person commented that the concert was intact in Addis Abeba Ghenet Hotel and not in Meqele.

Why do you think it’s posted as such?

        Hello, Berhe Y.

Interesting. I can imagine a couple of reasons for posting it as such. But, since I don’t have proof I’ll keep it to myself…. 🙂

I can’t read Ge’ez, so I took it for what was written in English. Thanks for pointing it out.

          Hi Lebam,

I didn’t say you should remove it, I was just asking.

Interesting again, you say you are from Hamasien but at the same time you can’t read geez. It’s possible but it sound strange.

Yes, you’re right. I can’t read Geez, but I speak Tigrinja fluently. I am born in Sweden, that is my excuse. However, I had opportunities to learn, but didn’t, so it isn’t a a good excuse.

  • Haile S.

Selam Paul, Hashela, Emma and all,

On some of the questions on tigrigna poems:
First to Emma: In reply to Hashela’s interesting input, when I said ግጥሚ & ገጣማይ in tigrigna may not be the original names for Poem and Poet, respectively, I didn’t express myself correctly. It was not to say these words are not used or incorrect. It was to say that there are words that express ግጥሚ & ገጣማይ better in the sense of expressing the aim of poetry. These were words more frequently used by our Grandies: ቅኔ for poem and ተቐናይ for poet. If we look the books that have been published at the end of 19th and begging of 20th century, I haven’t come across a poet being addressed as ገጣማይ. The word used was ተቐናይ or as applicable to the purpose of the poem as ዋጣ፡ ማሰኛ፡ ኣልቃሲ(ት) etc.

So Hashela, when we say ገጣማይ, it reduces the poet. It makes him/her a sculptor of the last syllabus, ሓኽሊ ድሙ፡ ማይህሙ፡ ናይ ቀደሙ kind of thing. While ቅኔ and ተቐናይ go beyond fitting syllables. ቅኔ express the process, the manner, the sound of the poem is for, and the ተቐናይ the effort, art and sophistry the individual puts to shape words and the message transmitted.

To Paul’s question: “does tigrigna rhyme stronger than other languages?” If I understand correctly your question, I would say, yes it appears, at least compared to english and french for example especially when it is written and read by someone. Add to that the guttural nature of prononciation of some of the letters. Lets not forget that poems essentially were verbal in our tradition. Therefore, the strength of rhythms varied on the purpose of the poem. Poems by a lonely shepherd lamenting his condition or a group girls singing melancholically (example ኣትን ትሃትማና፡ ኣትን ትድስቃና፡ ካብ ሎሚ ምሸት’የ፡ ይግፋክን ምድሪ ቤትየ…..) don’t have the same style of expressing themselves as a court cantor (ማሰኛ, ኣውሎ) flattering his lord or a soldier expressing his valor or social cantor who goes at every marriage and mourning (ዋጦት፡ ኣልቀስቲ) to accompany the happiness or the sorrow.

On a more general note, poems in Eritrean highlands (everywhere else as well) tell stories and history. In the absence of a habit writing and documenting events, poems are one of the important sources. Below are two poems by a ተቐናይ (not sur it was the same person) following the defeat of the leader of the Akele-Guzay region by ደጃች ውቤ.
The first is in praise of the defeated leader. The second is in condemnation of the unjust tax imposed on Marriage in the same region by ኮከቤ, the newly nominated representative of ደጃች ውቤ።
Source of both poems: Carlo Conti Rossini, Canti popolari Tigrai. In Zeitschrift fur Assyriologie Und Verwandte Gebiete, Carl Bezold 1905/1906, Strassburg.

Thank you for this interesting view point. I you are right to put ግጥሚ in a broader context of art and narration. As I understand it, ቅኔ involves more than just poetry.

      On related topics:
Correct me, should I be wrong. My impression is that the number of Tigrina poem is overwhelmingly focused on person, person’s did, people, villagers and so on. Do you know a collection of poems that focuses on nature and natural observations.

      • Haile S.

        Selam Hashela,

On the existence of published collection of poems, yes there are. As Emma mentioned, there is the works of Dr Russom. He had a different style and was highly criticized at Dehai at the end of the 90s.
There are more and more younger generation of Eritreans publishing their poetic works. We have our greatest Kokhob Selam here, I hope he publishes his works. Here are two small booklets I acquired few years back.

On what you said about tigrigna poems being “overwhelmingly focused on person, person’s did, people, villagers and so on”. Not always, perhaps with the increase in city-dweller and dwindling of the villages and traditional living. You know better than me how villager know their environment, every gorge, hill, birds, insects etc and also including them in their songs and poems. ኣንቲ ዋሪ ዋሪ ዋሪ…. ኣረነ ኣረነ…. ኣንቲ ኮምብራዛ…etc. I let you continue the little songs.

      Selam Hailat,

Your perspectives are always appreciated and gives different angles. I am familiar with the words ቅኔ and ተቃናይ:: From my understanding (I might be wrong) the former (ቅኔ) it refers to a saying (be it spoken or written) that require interpretation for its sophistication. ንኣብነት “ናቱስ ቅኔ ዝመልኦ ኣዛራርባ’ዩ” ክበሃል ይከኣል:: By that it means to express the sophistication of his saying. The later (ተቃናይ) is the one who talks ብቅኔ::

When words and languages evolve, the words that had to mean many things, societies do eventually start to untangle the words and develop new words to give them specific meaning. ንኣብነት “ግጥሚ” ቅድሚ ነዚ ዘበናዊ ኣጋጣጥማ ምጅማሩ ዳርጋ the entire of the text was ending by the same rhyming alphabets. Nowadays it has different ways of structuring the poem by changing the rhyming words every three to four. One of the example is the poems of the late Dr Russom (rip).

I agree with what you and Emma said, but applies more to amharic than tigrigna especially when talking about the composer of the poems. In tigrigna I couldn’t come across a composer being referred as ገጣማይ on any nuances of poetry in publications other than recent ones. He is referred to as ተቐናይ.

Saleh, Haile, Brhan, Abi, and others

Thanks to our exposure to different languages and culture across the globe, we have/had the privilege to enjoy the literary products of our host countries. As Saleh pointed out, the style, depth, and sophistication of poetry vary vastly. I think we all agree that a poem, when translated, more than often loses its power. We agree also that translating a poem requires an extra-ordinary language skill that only few possess. And of course, not every poem is translatable. Despite the short-coming of translation, sometime one can get glimpse of the power and depth of the poem.

I wonder whether we can sometime enrich our ጀበና (Jebena) with our favorite poems by translating from French, German, ኣማሪኟ, Arabic to English. Is there a copy right issue?

Below is my translation of a poem written by one of my favorite German poets. His name is Hans Magnus Enzensberger. The poem is from his book entitled “Die Geschichte der Wolken”

    “Temperatures

There are temperatures that no thermometer can measure,
only the skin can distinguish them:
the cool scent of a baby skin that smells like butter milk,
the lukewarm whiff of peaches from the refrigerator,
the rash of a rage that spread over our face,
the feverish glut of jealousy on the fingers’ tip,
the frost pattern that burns the tongue of a curios child,
the heat of shame that floods our body,
and something that otherwise never and nowhere occurs in our galaxy:
the warmth that a community offers* ”

    * I took the libert modify the

      Selam Hashela,

Beautiful poem and beautifully said. Thank you! The effort is mutual. Despite criticisms, this site and forum gives a great exposure to politics, literature, culture and etc…

This is also in a partial response to the original Paul’s question:

The relationship between a language and its poems is like a key and a lock mechanism. Translation doesn’t always fit. And when it doesn’t fit, you have to acquit :-). Poem is sculptured in the culture of its language. Our tigrigna poems are tuned and wired to our culture and our language, to our ears that the silliest poem like this one brings a joy and big smile to our face

      To continue later.

        Selam Haile

Thank you for the above poem. i specially like the two last lines :-).

Now back to poetry in different languages and cultures.
It is instructive to examine the origin and derivative of the word “poetry” in
different languages. The result is very telling!

The German word for poetry is “Gedicht” and a poet is “Dichter”. These words describe a process of making something dense or condensing and a person who is specialized in condensing. It emphasizes the condensing of thoughts.

In Tigrinya: ግጥሚ and ገጣማይ. These words emphasize the fitting ( rhyme) by a fitter ( rhymer). Most of Tigrinya poems put great emphasis on the rhythm.

        • Haile S.

          Selam Hashela,

Very interesting angle and I agree. But, I doubt the original tigrigna names for poem and poet are ግጥሚ and ገጣሚ. Will try to continue what I started later.

P.S. I hear you Paul saying: ቁምነገር ንዘይዛረብ፡ ለይተር ክብል ኣሕቢጡና!

    Selam the Great Awate People,

Although too busy to engage, I can’t refrain from peeping into the Awate screen and savour your poetic discussions. I see everyone bringing his favorite poet in the languages of his adoption. Well, don’t forget mine too, the Verlaines, Baudelaires, Rimbauds etc. Rimbaud is not a foreigner to Ethiopians, he resided in Hara for some years.
Provided the moderator (ሓላው ደጀ-ሰላም) tolerates it, here is a link to a nice Rimbaud’s poem, the searchers for Lice, in both the original french and english translation (second half of the page). I had also partly translated it to tigrigna (ሃደንቲ ቁማል..), in my way, a year or so ago here at Jebena (not easy to trace it back online). Enjoy

            Mohandis and Paulos,

            Mohandis is right….

Frenji is actually Arabic for Frenjah, (French). The Muslim history written in Arabic, refers to Europeans as Frenjah. I think France used to be the big brother of Europe and even England spoke French before developing English.

Does any of you know the source of the word KHEWAJA for Whites?

          • Paulos

            Aya Saleh,

That is awesome. Thank you so much for the lesson. I actually didn’t know that including Khewaja.

            Saleh,
Could this be the origin of it?

          • Saleh Johar

            Mohandis,
Very good. I didn’t see that–I should have googled it but that didn’t cross my mind. True, as I know it, the term is used to refer to foreigners (mostly white people). I Egypt, Sudan and Eritrea (and some parts of the Middle East) the Armenians, Greeks and others were called Khewaja, but then it crossed to mean all Europeans. If you say the khewaja store, it means a store owned by a white person. But the link with Sufis makes sense. Usually Sufis are wonderered — strangers wherever they lived. This reminded me of revisiting some Sufi books, mainly Roumi and Abdulkadie jellani. The latter a renwoned Saint among many Eritrean Sufis who celebrate wednesdays as the Day of abdulkadir jellani, with coffee, hmbasha and popcorn. In many places in Eritrea, there are small prayer spaces spread with white sand, surrounded by stone used as praying spaces for travellers–at least I remember a few around Keren.

Once in Agadir (Morocco) I visited the old city, a plateau that was devastated by an earthquake in the early 1960, only the Jellani prayer spaces are preserved by the people but the rest is rubble left after the quake. Then, observing the women’s dress, jewelry and others things made me think there has to be some connection with Eritrea. If you want to see that, listen to some Amazique music and you will understand what I mean–even the cadence of the language is related. They also use the Chirra wata. The culture in the towns and villages from Marrakesh to the Atlas mountains in Southern Morocco felt as if I was roaming the streets of Agordat or Keren. Maybe i should do an episode on that, what do you think?

          • Abi

            Selam Ato Saleh
Waiting for the episode. Don’t make us wait. Nothing interests me more than the sociolinguistics aspects of society. Of course, dabo comes first.

          • Paulos

            Aya Saleh,

I am sure you know it but I was kind of surprised when I found out the reason they are called Sufis. It is because they don Sheep hides as in ቆርበት በጊዕ and as you know back in Eritrea we say ሱፍ ጁባን ስረን for instance.

          • Saleh Johar

            Paulos,
the origin of the word Sufi is probably the most confusing. But it is widely accepted that modest spiritual people wore wool all day and slept in it, their only worldly property. there are also some who associate that work with agnostics who spend their time in contemplation, soul searching etc. But then it widely spread among the intellectuals and spirituals of the muslim world who became a different breed of Muslims, more metaphysically inquisitive though divided between extremes: one more rational and very inquisitive, critical, and the other opting for simpler explanations about life, creation, God, etc. which was considered apostasy. In the formative years at least in Islam) they were too deep in philosophy (thus Sophism, which meant those who wallow in meaningless philosophical acrobatics, heresy). if you need to understand the Sufis and why they were shunned in history read the story of AlHallaj and you will see why they were considered apostates and condemned by the religious establishment as heretics. Today there are many Sufi schools who follow the teachings of a specific teacher, some are pretenders and cheats while others are philosophers and pious people.Their teaching is called Teriqa, (literally a road) and their followers adhere to the teachings of a certain teacher. The Khatmiya (Murqaniya is such a Teriqa in Eritrea) as there are others.

          • Abi

            Selam Ato Saleh
“Teriqa” is most probably related to መጠረቅ in Amharic.
            ወሬ መጠረቅ= ዝባዝንኬ ማውራት
It is always used with a negative connotation.
            አቦ ወሬ አትጠርቅ…

          • Hashela

            Hello Saleh

This is so close to our highland (high land-low land transition) melody and songs. Fascinating, where is the culturally connecting bridge?

          • Saleh Johar

            Hi Hashela,
WE haven’t been able to research and tell our own history and that is the problem.

But there is a theory with some plausible evidence regarding the connecting bridge–You know most West Africans and some north Africans used the red sea route to reach Mecca in their pilgrimage. Since the trip took years, some settled along the route. Scattered everywhere, they mixed with the locals and today it is difficult to tell. That is a juicy research project for a PhD. Don’t you think so?

          • Hashela

            Selam Saleh

You are right, the route to Mecca seems one of the most plausible scenarios.

It seems that a combination of genetics, linguistics, and history research presents a comprehensive and most promising approach.

          • Simon Kaleab

            Selma Saleh G.,

France is derived from Franks (a Germanic tribe) that ruled from what is now France to East Germany. Charles Martel was a famous Frankish Duke. The Celtic Gauls were the natives of France.

England spoke Norse (Scandinavian) in the East and North, and Saxon (Old German) in the South.

The Normans, Scandinavian Vikings, came to England via France in 1066. They spoke Norman French. By this time, England was already speaking English, a Norse – Saxon hybrid.

            Selam Paul,

You made me a snack [ጥዓሞት, collation (fr)] eater every hour? 🙂 :-).

I think the tigrigna or amharic ፈረንጂ is a name given to the Franks or western european people, also commonly used (Franji or variants of it) by many eastern languages including turkish and arabic from which ፈረንጂ could have originated due proximity.

          • Paulos

            Selam Hailat,

In fact, as you put it, “Franks” seems to make more sense as opposed to the specific State France for the former as you know was kind of a pejorative term for “Barbarians” in line with the Goths and Visgohts who had invaded Western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. Thank you again.

          • Selam Abi,
One of the famous ደብተራs was Alequa Gebre Hanna, who was at the Menilik II palace, late 19th century. I think that an Amharic language professor at the AAU had written a book about the witty sayings (ሰምና ወርቅ) of the ደብተራ.
I am not sure but the word ደብ seems to connote sort of “conspiracy”, big or small, good or bad. Innocent are those of our ደብተራs as the witty words of the Alequa .
I would say that the well known “ደብተራ”, if i can use the term for him, due to his informal religious learning, was the infamous and evil Rasputin at the Tsar’s palace, at about the same time.
            What do you say?

            ጀቶች,

Give me time to comb some books later at home (Ullendorf, Jean Doresse), but their usage are different recently in the 20th century and the time before that, the Gondarian era for example.

          • Paulos

            Selam Abination and Aya Saleh,

This is how Bahru Zewdie in his book, “A History of Modern Ethiopia: 1855-1991” describes the power of ጸሃፊ-ትእዛዝ.

“…Until 1957, the post of Prime Minister was occupied by Bitweded Mokonen Endalkachew. One of the commanders of the Ethiopian forces on the Ogaden front in 1935-1936, and one who went into exile after the Italian victory, his towering physique contrasted with his political impotence. He was a mere ceremonial figure, given more to intellectual pursuit than to political machinations…..The de facto Prime Minister was Tsehafi-T”ezaz Welde-Giorgis Welde-Yohannes; a man of humble origins, he won the Emperor’s thrust and confidence during the years they spent together in exile. The unique position occupied by the Ministry of Pen as the institution closest to the Palace, as well as his own knack for political intrigue, made Welde-Giorgis the most powerful man next to the Emperor. For a decade and half, he dominated Ethiopian politics. In addition to being Tsehafi-T’ezaz for the whole period [1941-1955], he also held the portfolios of the Ministries of the Interior and Justice on various occasions….The person who played an important role in Weldegiorgis demise was Mekonen Habte-Weld. The son of a priest, his carrier goes back to the pre-1935 days, when he was director in charge of commercial affairs. He lived in exile in France during the Italian occupation. He then returned to assume the posts of Minister of Commerce and Agriculture, until he took the portfolio of Minister of Finance, with which his name was closely associated, and through which he left a long-lasting legacy impression on Ethiopian public administration……He was Minister of Finance from 1949-1958, two years before his death at the hands of the instigators of the abortive coup of 1960. His great assets were his system of patronage and the control of a elaborate personal intelligence network. The latter particularly endeared him to the Emperor, and may have tipped the balance in his favour in his struggle with Welde-Giorgis……It was under Mekonen’s protection that his younger brother Aklilu Havre-Weld emerged into the forefront of Ethiopian politics. He made his debut in the field of foreign affairs; He attained prominence representing Ethiopia’s case in UN debates on Eritrea…..

P.S. Aya Saleh, would you say, Bitweded Yemane Gebreab is ጻሓፊ-ትእዛዝ for Emperor Isaias Afwerki?

          • Saleh Johar

            Hi Paulos,
I believe ጸሃፊ ትእዛዝ is the equivalent of prime minister while ቃል ኣቀባይ is the equivalent of minister of information.

    Selam Haile

Thank you for sharing with us this paleontological discovery that is clearly
a continuation of several paleontological and paleoanthropological discoveries
in Eritrea since our Independence. Paleontology is the science that focuses on extinct fauna (animals) and flora (plants and vegetation). In collaboration with European Institutions, this kind of research is actively carried out in Eritrea and is significantly
contributing to an improved understanding of spatio-temporal evolution of fauna/flora
and climate in our region, Eastern Africa. The new discovery is a key addition,
refinement and spatial extension of what have been known from studies in Omo and
    Turkana valley and other regions.
The discovery of large numbers and diverse mammals (mega fauna) in a currently hyper-arid (very dry) climate region is strong evidence for past climate changes that made this region sometimes green and habitable to herbivores and carnivores and sometimes extremely dry and inhospitable.

The oscillation between more wet (more rain) and dry climate is astronomically predictable and is largely confirmed by fossil findings and paleo-climate studies on the ground. The main driver of periodically oscillating climate changes is the change in the Sun-Earth distance and the inclination of Earth’s rotation axis. These periodic changes are precisely predictable and occur in response to a gravitational pull-and-push by the moon(s) and other planets of our solar system.

For instance, the pathway along which the Earth revolves around the sun changes from a more elliptical to more circular shape with a periodicity of 100,000 years. The impact of this change is manifested in the climate as an ice cycle, the appearance and disappearance of large ice masses in the high latitudes (Arctic and Antarctic). This means a strong ice age appears very 100,000. We have very strong evidence for this phenomenon.

As you know, the Earth rotation axis is not perfectly vertical. It is tilted (inclined). The tilting (inclination) varies by rough 2 degree from 22 to 24 degree which is large. The period of maximal inclination changes occur every 41,000 years and has very strong impact on climate particularly Europe and North America.

For the subtropical and tropical regions (our region), the precession of the Earth’s rotation axis plays a pivotal role. This means the Earth’s rotation axis not only changes
its tilting every 41,000 years but also performs a precession (if it helps, just
image Hope/Sultan doing a precession around a church building). A full precession of Earth’s rotation axis takes 24,000 years and exerts a very strong control on the strength
and aerial (spatial extension) of monsoon rainfall in the tropics and subtropical regions, including our region. Of course, all three cycle occur at same time and influence each other and the climate. But the precession is the dominant factor in the in the tropics and subtropical regions.

For instance, about 8000-10,000 years the monsoon rainfall very strong and reached up
Libya, making the Sahara very green. In the today’s Sahara we find remnant of large
lakes and the remains (bone) of giraffe and hippos, gnus, buffalo, crocodiles
and freshwater fish that about 8000-10,000 years old.

Understanding the rhythm and driving mechanisms of climate process is crucial to better assess current and future climate changes.

Thank you for the laugh and reviving my fading childhood memory.

As child I was hyperactive and driving my mother into desperation.
It happened quite often that I got tied to the bed foot in the sleeping room (ውሻጠ) as a punishment. I every time managed to loosen the rope (ምራን) and go out and have fun with my buddies. And my mother knew it. It was a gentleman (unspoken) agreement: I stay tied for ~20 minutes and free myself and go out and my the mother pretend as if she hasn’t seen me.
One day, just to put my mother in bizarre situation, I decided not to untie myself, remain very quite and stay there. My mother though I am out. After estimated 6-7 hours my mother discovered me there and she was so mad at me and she cried.

Indeed, the field has experienced a revolution with the advent of Milankovitch theory, drilling of lakes in East Africa, providing a long climate records, the advancement of computational capacity for quantitative fully coupled climate simulation, and of course the development and refinement of isotope as a tool for climate reconstruction.

Awatenation is always bright when you show up.

  • Haile S.

    Selam Awate people,

Good news in Eritrea comes with an underlying bad one.

Shabait under our dearest Yemane G-Meskel today reports very interesting results of a dig. It reports >1 million year old skeletal remains of several species of animals, namely elephants, buffalo, pigs, hippopotamus and crocodiles were dug out in the Eritrean side of the Denakil depression. It says, the archeological projects were lead by professors from URV, UAB and UMA in collaboration with researchers from the Eritrean Commission of Culture and Sports (ECCS).

    Where is the problem, then?

It is great to see Eritrean individual’s names among the research groups and I am delightedly impatient to see their names listed among the authors of the resulting publications. Viva and thumbs up! to all dedicated Eritrean who give an appearance of normality to the nation!

The problem is the URV, UAB and UMA stand for Rovira Virgili University, University of Barcelona and University of Malaga, while on the Eritrean side we only have the Eritrean Commission of culture, ECC! I am dying of jealousy, because what I don’t see, the faculty or university of ቅርሲ!

After 30 years of independence, the lonely University of Asmara was fragmented into collages and none of the individuals involved in the report research is mentioned to even belong to the existing collages. Either they don’t belong to or No One Cares of mentioning it. Whatever the reason, it is another revealing aspect of our country. Eritrea’s educated people have No Chair or affiliation to a honorable house known as a University. They belong to our “originality”, to the archaic, wornout, outdated revolutionary or Ghedli system that should have been honored and exhibited in a museum along the results of the digs.

    • Berhe Y

      Hi Haile,

Thank you for sharing the good news.

I agree to all that you said, but I don’t understand what you said about “Ghedli system or outdated revolutionary” and if it has anything to do with the closure if the institution.

AU was shut down because it’s a place where it was producing students and intellectuals that were challenging the IA regime. And it was closed because it will be producing students that will challenge him.

I think we should just leave it there and don’t blame Ghedli for how he is turning our lives and our institutions upside down.

      Berhe

      • Haile S.

        Selamat Berhe,

What I was trying to say is that the regime gives primacy to the structures it brought from Ghedli era, like the cultural center. It has this Pavlovian reflex of going back to what it knows and coercing the fledgling institutions under these structured that hzve served their time. The ECCS is an organization that takes care of cultural affaires much more skewed to songs theatres, short movies, festivities and propaganda, as it stands now. Educational and research institutions should be out of it.

        • Berhe Y

          Hi Haile,

That the reason why I am not agreeing with you. That is the regime have conviction, believe, ideals that it stands for and implement based on principle.

I do not believe it dismantled AU because it believes that the country / students will be served if it is replaced by the cultural affairs.

It dismantled it because it’s a threat to to its existence. Yes, I agree and the ECCC should stay out if these and it should be associated to AU, and that’s should be our argument.

In other words, associating or blaming ghedli culture is not at all related in my opinion, and we should leave ghedli alone and separate with Isayas autocratic regime.

For example, the other day I listened the interview of Dr. Asefaw who was head of medical something during the liberation time. And if what he said is all true and believed, it’s amazing the type of organization and efficiency they had during the struggle era and in the field of medicine.

I hope I am making sense.

          Berhe

          • Haile S.

            Selamat Berhe,

You overstretched what I said, when you said “I do not believe it dismantled AU because it believes that the country / students will be served if it is replaced by the cultural affairs.”. The “cultural affair” thing was for linking the archeological research to it.
My mention of dismantling the university was to highlight the absence of of university organization that could have contained strong faculties, collages and research institutes that can absorb such kind of archeological research.
My fury on the Ghedli-born centers was to say they are being used as a reflexive default alternatives to weak, not farther looking programmes and an allergy of the regime to do like other (exceptionalism, ርእስና-ዝኸኣልና፡ ብጽፍርና and all that stuff).
Having said that I understand the collateral damages that can result on hammering at Ghedli unjustifiably.

            Selam Berhe,

UoA: In 1993, a UNDP sponsored 10 year Master plan was prepared.

            – Around US$ 50 Million loan was received from the World Bank.
            – A UNDP Grant was secured.
            – Staff were sent for further studies to Sweden, Holland, USA and Australia.
            – Indian lecturers were brought in to cover for staff on study leave.

There was a lot of good intention. Why a sudden change of plan?

I strongly believe that those animals died and buried in Eritrea to defend the Red Sea and እናት አገር from foreign expansionists.
We demand the remains to be returned to the rightful owners ASAP.

The reason Asmara University is not mentioned in the list is because it is not accredited and the government doesn’t want to open the Pandora-box. It is a slick way to avoid scrutiny as to why it failed to operate an accredited university 30 years after independence.

Didn’t I tell you how poor my father was growing up? The first time he slept on a bed was when he joined ቀዳማዊ ኃይለስላሴ ዩኒቨርስቲ:: He was the poorest of poor. See where my ዳቦ ለተራበ ዲሞክራሲ ለጠገበ መፈክር coming from? One day I will tell you what he did when he was a graduate student at American university at Beirut.
My mom is a totally different story. Her father was a very smart businessman.
My parents story is like ሰብለ እና በዛብህ with a great ending.
My father was her mentor ( አስጠኚ) for a little pocket money and a decent food. Long story short, he was a gold digger if you know what I mean:)

I was very combative when I joined Awatenation. Mr Kim is the one who gave me the title ፊታውራሪ. I refused to that title and immediately prompted myself to ራእሲ.

That is the collective vision for both Eritrea and Ethiopia including the rest of Africa–Quality education, quality health care, full employment, narrowing the inequality gap, investing in clean energy as in solar, wind and hydro…”Si se peude!*”

*In 1972, two leaders of the United Farmers Union named Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta gave a slogan to their Union with “Si se peude.” And thirty years later, a charismatic young African American gave his Presidential Campaign the same slogan but in English where it says, “Yes We Can!”

That is super. Thank you so much for sharing the great news. Did they mention the implications of the great discovery? Buffalo and Elephants? That is incredible! Would you say then Buffalo migrated to North America prairies from Eritrea or coastal Red Sea assuming that during the Ice Ages when the great seas were covered with solid ice? This is really interesting. Glad you mentioned Asmara University. I wonder if it had Department or Faculty of Archeology? Just curious.

      • Abi

        Paul
I knew some AAU lecturers graduated from Asmara university when it was run by the Derg. Good times:)

      • Haile S.

        Selam Paul,

We have to wait the publications to come out for implications and other details of the findings.
I am from Abi’s university, I don’t know a lot about UoA and not sure if it had an Archeology faculty. But I assume it must have a lot ambitions before it was dismantled.

        • Paulos

          Selam Hailat,

As you know, the Great East African Rift Valley that runs pretty much from Mozambique all the way to Syria was formed or created circa 30 million years ago and it took 2.5 million to form and as you know, it gave our region the famous “Y” shape that had dissected the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.

Certainly, the long processed formation fundamentally changed the vegetation as in fauna and flora including not only the ecosystem but the weather pattern as well where the wet air that had flown from the Indian ocean was blocked by the Rift and subsequently the South-Eastern inland of Africa got drier and the wild animals migrated somewhere else. And I am assuming that, the animals you mentioned might have migrated to the coastal region of the Red Sea because of it. I am just assuming. Maybe, Awatista experts in that area can shed some light on it. Thanks again.

          Hi Haile,

I think it had I don’t know if it still has. Around 2000 I attended a seminar with an researcher who was doing work in Eritrea where they found some of the early tools used by humans. It featured at discovery channel and he was working with the department of archaeology.

I don’t know if this is related to the topic but here is some of the work in that area.

    Dear all,

I found just now in my Email kokhobselamone@gmail.com Long time I didn’t open..I open just now after giving in this side to get the news of our brother Amanuel….

    The bellow was from Admase..

    Selam dear Kokhob Selam,

First, Merry Christmas to you and your family. I have been following this esteemed web site for many years and at the same time I was also reading your poem (at Jebena) and your take on issues till we lost you for sometime. It feels good to know that your recovery is in full circle when one reads those poems above. Particularly, “ዓይኒ ጠርሙዝ” is a strong and beautiful metaphor. ይበል! to all your poems.

Since your Jebena is an art arena for all of us, I want to get off my chest what I felt about those who are covering up the true color of the change in Ethiopia including the PM through my way, poem.

The name sounds very familiar. I think if that is him, he was not a typical uptight teacher like any other teacher but he was a chill guy who would have drinks with his students after class to the extent of paying for bus thicket for his students of they happened to be on the same bus with him riding to school.

    Dear all,

    The lightworkers meditation, I participated..

We are here now and we should take care of the moment..In the past we have allowed to the devil to manage our lives but now the elector magnetic energy is within us to start with..when we manage it collectively that will be of a great victory …Let us combine our energy and won over the evil–that is creating among us fear instead of love..Just let us understand that we are electrical – beings. And the DNA in us is sound and light reception..we can move to 5D instead of 5G which..is most natural.

Schumann Resonance OVERLOAD is nice to experience..and think about sound and light and frequencies. Let us reconnect with higher self that we all miss, but it was with us all..

Are you interested about it? Let me know..

    KS,,

    • Kokhob Selam

      Yes Awate People,

So you may it be interested and part of this has to do with our vibration raising, feeling higher states of emotion, more unconditional love, bliss, joy, and peace. That is who we really are. The third dimension is us forgetting about that. Us going into the dream of separation and then going through a process of awakening so that we can remember who we are again and then in a way, reemerge as that higher dimensional state of consciousness as that love, joy, peace. Because that’s what we naturally are. The idea is that there’s the 5D reality and the 3D reality,

    Dear All,

Is Mother Earth Teaching Us A Lesson? What, do you think?

Now, the people are terrorized and everybody is in the house..Is that a Karma? Everybody should watch this climate. Nature is teaching us to think by measure within deep go inside. Is this global epidemic Mother Earth Lesson to all of us?

    Tragic, way of lesson?

No, I don’t think so..We human beings kill 70 billion animals per year and the virus should jump to other alternative, to survive most properly.

And to be honest we have the 5G crime ==That, in it self is another crime we human beings commit..How many birds ,insects had lost their life due to frequency? That is not to say we deserve it ..

    Say you say please..

        Thank you Yosief Tewolde,

Thank you very much my dear ,,

It’s essential NOT to be overly distracted by the physical drama. When you realise there comes a point where you have no control over the physical, then it’s time to go deeper internal, all the way back to the source in you. Then to pick up the flowing waves of the soul, felt as lightness, ease, surrender, and timeless connection. I think, we have to go more on the subject..

  • Selam All,

Coronavirus in a divided nation. What would our ethno-nationalist politicians do when the common enemy which knows no ethnic borders and ethnicities is already with us? What would the many political leaders do to help? Could they form a common national front and help the people they say they represent, to overcome this pandemic? Have people like Jawar come out to tell those who swear in his name to heed the precautions to fight the spread of the virus, or are they saying business as usual? It is really outrageous when the PP is said to have carried out political gathering in Gondar. Let’s hope that Ethiopians will realize that defeating the scourge of coronavirus first and foremost, is more important than partisan/ethnic politics that has divided the nation. Everybody is responsible.
Eritrea, on the other hand, is not a divided nation as Ethiopia happens to be, and she is supposed to handle the problem better than Ethiopia. The small number of the population is also another factor. Nevertheless, even in this case, there is no place for complacency, but hard work.

    • iSem

      Hi Horizon:
You would think this would be an opportunity in disguise to unite the people, but for sure some will find a way to exploit it for sure and maybe a reason for Abi to further postpone election,
Eritrea, superficially yes, but the country is divided much more than before and the is no independent stats, what the government say is always a lie so cannot be relied upon. But since no one will question its draconian measure, if the government implements something to defend against corona, it can succeed, but since PFDJ;s goal is to eradicate the youth, it may keep quite and the crowded and unhealthy sawa school can infect many.

      • Selam iSem,

To survive, Ethiopians have no other choice other than to unite, even if there were no Coronavirus, let alone with an enemy which is shaking the very foundations of even great nations. The whole world should work together to overcome this pandemic, if human species is to survive on planet earth. This is the message the WHO is trying to send to the world community.
China is showing the way, by helping Africa and even western countries including the USA, if i am not mistaken. The 1918 flu-pandemic is said to have cost 20mn lives, others say 50. This is a VERY SERIOUS situation for the whole world, let alone Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Whether the elections are on time or postponed, priority number one is people’s lives. Ethiopian lives shouldn’t be sacrificed for the sake of whoever may come after the elections. He/she is not going to save a single life. What is to be done, should be done now, today and not tomorrow. Everything should be directed to the war front against the Coronavirus. Trump who has self-appointed the “war-time president” cannot be trusted. Everybody must do his/her part.
There should be no partisan politics in this matter of national/international concern. In front of a world-wide pandemic, the consequences of which will be hard to bear, especially by poor third world countries like Ethiopia and Eritrea, the slogan should be “united we win divided we fall”. Those who are prescribing partisan politics, instability and elections or bust, not a single day later, etc, even under a world-wide crisis, are the enemies of Ethiopia. Will the USA be able to carry out the coming elections if coronavirus is still around, killing hundreds of people everyday? Time will show.

        Selam Hashela,

The announcement of the ministry says the man arrived from Norway through Dubai. What is important now is the tracking of all potentially exposed individuals. If it really is the first case in eritrea, there is a high chance of limiting the spread by identifying and asking them for strict self-isolation. This is tricky for a country, culture and economy not used and less endowed to follow strict measures. I hope it will be taken very seriously.

        • Hashela

          Selam Haile

While it is easy to blame the authorities in retrospective, I wonder whether is was wise to let the passengers go out of the Airport building before everyone was screened for elevated temperature.
Now the passengers are with their beloved and relatives and kissed (ከመይ ኣላ ድሓን ዶ ኣለኻx25) every person they came across.,

Looking at the great interactive map for which provided the linke, I was positively surprised about the relatively low numbers of KNOWN cases. Initially, I thought it may be due to lack of screening. If the numbers are true, then African country are doing a better job. Is that possible that they learned from the Ebola cases. Or is it because we live relatively isolated?

In a related issue: I think the Eritrean government was in dilemma regarding the Ethiopian Airlines that provide Eritrea with the main link to the world. The Ethiopian Airline was one of the few company that it not stopped it flight service to China, the epicenter of Covig-19.

Anyway, one of the lessons we have learned so far is that authoritarian regimes have easier than others to impose draconian measures and limit the spread of the disease.

          • Haile S.

            Selam Hashela,

I checked the regime’s website & EriTV, they just say the individual is getting care, but don’t say the most essential thing to do, i.e to isolate those in contact with the individual.
I agree with you, families will be happy to see and kiss their long awaited members coming from abroad. The culture of KISS (social kissing) is one of the factors that drove the pandemic in continental Europe to the level we know. EriTV was talking about many other things, but nothing about COVID-19 except to read the short notice of the new case. The regime’s apologists need push their regime to talk more about the disease rather than to meeting outside and repeating measures that is being taken in their respective countries.

    Dear Awate readers and forumers,

It is very important to keep ourselves safe from the ongoing pandemic. To do this it is important to get information from reliable sources, which include authorities of your respective countries. WHO is the world authority on this aspect and it is worthwhile visiting its site. Here is a link to a WHO page that gives a good one page access to most of the things you need to know. Please click the myth buster section to understand some of the misconceptions that are running around.

As I reach out to you today, the globe is in the midst of a viral health pandemic, one that is still spreading, is yet to reach its peak and requires our urgent and diligent attention. It seems to me that is wake up call..No to 5G is the slogan of this year..The way out is only to live the 5D life ..

The fifth dimensional frequency operates on Earth right now. You can access it and be aware of it by raising your consciousness. How do you do this? Well, there are many ways. Firstly, by physically cleansing and de-toxing your body.

I know many of you rightly complain when discussions about Abyssinian/Ethiopian history dominate the forum. BTW, it is also partly an Eritrean history. My intention is not to drag you into this, but just to call the attention of those who are interested, to visit Wikipedia today. Ethiopian historiography is featured today on the first page and it shows a closely taken photo of the Ezana stone showing the geez and greek engravings. We don’t see such nice photos of the stone.

    Selam Awate people,

This is not to stop you discussing the GERD or the go for the ink-shed, but my offer of a side dish.

Printable photography was invented by a french guy, Nicéphore Niépce around 1826 and the first existing photos are from him. These photos were a view from a window, and a boulevard in Paris.

Who do you think is the first Abyssinian individual to be photographed and identified by name or whose photo survived? I have an idea, but not 100% sure.

    • Haile S.

      Selam Awate People,

No one dares to try my side dish? Anyway I am presenting it to you again. Whose photograph among the following do you think is the earliest surviving photo?

I go for the Eritrean(s) from your list!

        • Haile S.

          Selam Hashela,
Good guess, but there are other known earlier ones.

          • Hashela

            Haile

If I am not mistaken, Naib and Hamid were people from the coastal region of Eritrea. It is possible they had an earlier contact with white ‘travelers’ than leaders from Kebesa.

            Naib Idris Hassen?

          • Haile S.

            Selam Hashela,
A very logical reasoning. But the known existing photos of the Naib and Kentibai date to between the arrival of Italians and 1900. BTW Hamid Kentibai was the chief of Habab, Naib Hassan of Hirgigo.

          • Hashela

            Selam Haile

As you notice, I am limiting my guess and focus on Eritreans as we had enough glorification of the Ethiopian ‘historic’ personalities by Paulos and others

You are funny! I noticed that. Sorry I have a weak side for Abyssinian history, unlike Paul’s weak side…..:-).

Abi got the answer. The earliest known is that of Prince Alemayehu taken alone and with capitain Speedy behind him.

            Hi Prof. Hailat,
            I have a question on Alula’s decedents.
There is this great guy from Indianapolis, another Hailat, mentioned one time Alula brought his solders and settled in villages around Asmara. He stated that these solders married Eritrean women and their decedents all over the surroundings.
Also, I am hearing the most Tigrayan decedents in Eritrea resides in Emba Derho. I am not sure if those many colonels/Generals has has something to do with this.
Since you seem to know a lot a bout history, can you chime on that?

            Selam Abi,

Ras Alula was brilliant. But the greatest General ever was Field Marshal Georgy Zhukov. He broke the spinal cord of Hitler’s formidable army. The other great general was Field Marshal Konstantin Rokossovsky. These generals won EPIC battles.

          • Abi

            Selam Simon
            Thanks for the information.
I’m sure the two Field Marshals were products of the best military academies. I also think that they were armed with the best of everything that the country provided including man power.
General Alula on the hand was armed with a good load of ሀሞት and ጦርና ጋሻ::

The other major difference is that Ras Alula was A Mountain Marshal while the others were Field Marshals.
            ( just kidding.)

          • Simon Kaleab

            Selam Abi,

            Some more information:

            ጦርና ጋሻ? Alula used guns.

Both Zhukov and Alula come from poor peasant backgrounds, but they were endowed with natural intelligence.

          • Abi

            Hello Simon
            Sorry for the belated response
General Alula used ” ቆመህ ጠብቀኝ” ጠመንጃ::
Your guy had all the weapons in the world and more.

          • Simon Kaleab

            Selam Abi,

            “ቆመህ ጠብቀኝ” ጠመንጃ?

            The same as his opponents.

          • Amanuel Hidrat

            Selam Simon,

Indeed Marshal Gregory Zhuko is the greatest ever who fought an extensive wars from world war-I to World war-II both on the Eastern front against Japanese army and western front against Hitler’s army. Yes he broke the back bone of Hitler’s army and run his army up to Berlin.

      • Selam Haile S.,
Could it be that of Lij Alemayehu who was taken to the British royal court in the 1860s after the defeat of Teodros his father at Meqdela?

        • Haile S.

          Selam Horizon,
Yes, in 1868. See my response to Hashela and Abi.

  • Haile S.

    Selam Awate people,

Yesterday, Hashela delved into a subject that was “prematurely” brought by the wind of restitution of artefacts falling on Ethiopia from Europe and asking when when Ethiopia will restitute artefacts collectex from Eritrean archeological sites. Although not as urgent as the life of our fleeing population, it has become easier to talk about restitution of materials than restitution of life in the present day Eritrea. Weird? I agree!

Now, I am NOT writing here to call for a restitution of an Eritrean artefact though very legitimate, but rather to give you from what I read, an example on how a unique artefact was just taken to the British museum from Ethiopia at the end of the 19th century. Imagine how many treasures have been taken this was. The example I cite here resides in the British Museum, but the large bulk of collections are in the hands of private collectors. I use to know collectors of crosses and talisman (magic charms). Imagine the collections accumulated for years by the d’Abbadie brothers from France!

The example I am citing is a well documented theft (there is no other word for it, despite myself) by a well known and highly respected traveller and writer, infact, one of my favorite personality by his knowledge and style of writing. I am talking about the honorable Theodore Bent. Bent in his book, “The Sacred city of the Ethiopians” recounts on how he acquired a unique and magnificient traditional painting belonging to the Medhanie-Alem church of Adwa. Bent visited Abyssinia and the Adwa area he will be talking about a couple of years before the Adwa war. This church is one of the Ethiopian Churches that is internally decorated by several traditional paintings. The painting is unique in its style and color. You can see images of it if you google for images using key words like Abyssinian paintings + british museum. The painting is about the crucifixion of Jesus and about all the events around it, that stems from and far beyond. The unusual blue and pink colors are extraordinary for Abyssinian painting that are dominated by green yellow and red, especially since the turn of the last century. I can post the link, but it is weekday and it is a google image; therefore, copy right issues will significantly delay the apparition of the link at Awate, so please search by yourselves using the key words.

I will not pollute the story with my own words. Directly from the horses mouth, here is what Theodore Bent says about how he obtained this painting. He also describes in details the church and the subjects of the painting, my favorite part. Here you go

“…. The church of the Saviour of the World is very big, at least 50 feet in diameter, and is divided, as usual, into the three conventional divisions; it stands on a raised platform with a sunk fence around it, and the thatched roof is supported by very substantially-built columns. The wood work of the porch is very fine; small blocks of wood, each with an elaborate pattern of Byzantine style, are inserted into all the angles, acting as supports and decoration to the doors; the outer court was strewn with grass, and contained a collection of drums and musical instruments for the services. The pictures, too, are good and elaborate—one especially, of Pharaoh and his host drowning in the Red Sea, with their heads just above water, struck us as peculiarly realistic and quaint, whilst the crowds beneath the water are represented by neat rows of five swords or six guns.

…. It was here in the church of the Saviour of the World that I espied a picture cast on one side, for the colours were somewhat faded, which I faintly hoped to acquire. At first our offers were received with contempt, but again and again we sent our interpreter, and with him ten pieces of silver, the sight of which eventually overcame the priest’s dread of mutilation, and the evening before our final departure from Adoua the picture was ours. Our interpreter himself was terrified at what he had done. ‘ We must not breathe a word of the transaction, even to the Italians,’ he said ; ‘we must bury the treasure at the bottom of our deepest bag ‘ ; and to all these regulations we gladly acquiesced, for we knew the great difficulty of acquiring these things in Abyssinia, and the danger to which we all should be exposed if our transaction should be discovered, and I am pretty nearly sure that this picture which is now in the British Museum is the first of its kind which has reached Europe. The picture is 7 ft. high by 5 ft. 8 in. broad and is painted on a piece of silk canvas. The crucifixion, which occupies the center of the picture, is peculiarly Byzantine in the thin, angular shape of the body, the drooping head, and pallid hue, and might be well a production of Mount Athos were it not for its surroundings. As is usual in these Abyssinian pictures, evil-doers are side-faced, good people full-face, as is evidenced in the compartment allotted to the flagellation. Apparently, the subjects to the right of the picture represent scenes before the Passion; those to the left, after the Resurrection. One of them depicts the quaint Eastern legend of the Christ being let down into Hades by a cord, and Adam and Eve receiving the body. At the foot of the cross is the skull of Adam, conformable to the Eastern legend that Shem and Melchisedek took the head of Adam and buried it in Golgotha; over the skull trickle three streams of blood, symbolically washing away the sins of the first Adam. The figures of the Maries and Joseph at the foot of the cross are peculiarly elaborate, and the embroidered garments worn by the women are of distinctly local colouring. The three angels holding three vases to the three wounds would look as if in some form or another the legend of the Holy Grail had penetrated into Abyssinia. Far above, in the left-hand corner of the picture, is painted the devil fleeing in terror from this world. Altogether, this picture is a most interesting embodiment of the Abyssinian conception of the Passion and shows clearly the Greek influence which was at work in this Church. As for the minor details of local colouring, they are amusing, and produce grotesque anachronisms. The Roman soldiers have all got their matchlock rifles; the spear which pierces the side of Christ is an exact counterpart of an Abyssinian spear; the Roman soldier has an Abyssinian toe-stirrup. The priests who dance to welcome Christ as He enters Jerusalem have got their drums, their sistra, their pastoral staves, and their fly-flaps, and the trappings of the mules are entirely Abyssinian. Yet, taken as a whole, this picture is purely Byzantine in character, and shows beyond a doubt the source from which the sacred art of Abyssinia has been derived.”
