Selam HaileTG, thank you for the comment. However, it is not entirely correct translation. Let me give you a perspective so that you can have a realistic and full picture of the message. Be it for a political consumption or out of willful historical blindness, some people tend to paint a rosy historical narrative. I would love to learn if there was a time where Eritrea and Ethiopia had coexisted in peace and harmony(with the exception of 1991-1997). Ethiopian history of aggression, violence, raid, and massacre did not start during and after the illegitimate federation years. It goes way back to 18c and beyond where Michael Sehul, Wube HM, Alula Aba Nega and others had terrorized Eritrea societies. The resentment against the Abyssinian cruelty had marked the beginning of Eritrean national political consciousness, albeit, not in a collective and unified form. It is also worth noting that most of the Eritrean population welcomed the Italian colonial occupation in search of protection from the Abyssinian warlords. The magnitude of cruelty and human depravity Eritrea and Eritreans had endured during the Dergue and Haile Selassie regime are in the history books for you to read. So, the bottom-line is that the relationship between Eritrea and Ethiopia was never built on love and trust. Eritrea and Ethiopia are yet to build a peaceful coexistence based on mutual respect, trust, and understanding. Eritreans love their country. The opposition are opposing the government because they love their country; the supporters are supporting the government because they think the government is protecting the country they love. But both the opposition and supporters would always come together when the perceived or real threat comes from Ethiopia. Eritreans would not react the same way if Djibouti, Sudan or Yemen threatens Eritrea. Therefore, there is no more unifying factor for Eritreans than a perceived/real threat from Ethiopia.

    ሰላማት ባህልቢ:

This is a nice article that uses rich observation of current events and suggest ways to use them to speed up the struggle for justice. I have one problem with your point [ሀ] ዘይተሓሰበ ጸጋ (Blessing in Disguise). For readers sake, a rough translation is that “Eritrean nationalism is founded more on hating Ethiopia than loving Eritrea per se” And you give the example that “even if most Eritreans couldn’t overcome their differences to even pay respect to the Lampedusa victims together, however a news of Ethiopian troops in Massawa can unite 6 million Eritreans. Therefore we need to use Ethiopian violations [anti Ethiopia sentiment] as a unique gift that can mobilize our people” . This is the gist of what you stated and not exact translation. Hopefully, you think it is a fair capture of what you wished to say.

The above is a dangerous ploy. We can’t instigate and foment hatred and division among people of Ethiopia and Eritrea in order to achieve some political gains. Morally questionable and practically untenable. I believe you are floating this idea out of good intentions. But you haven’t thought it out long enough. It would create a worse curse than the one we are in. I hope you understand this and withdraw that point from you otherwise nice article.

    Thank you.

      Selam haileTG,

No foreign entity, especially Ethiopian soldiers, should occupy any Eritrean land, period. It’s okay to make peace and create an environment that lends to economic development. It’s okay for Ethiopians to invest in Eritrea so that we both can benefit. Nevertheless, an Ethiopian military station in Eritrea will be an absolute disaster for our sovereignty and definitely will be a uniting force to dispose the regime. Therefore, I concur with the idea of unexpected ‘HiYab”. I might be hesitant for ‘HadHed WeGe’e’, but never to foreign invasion, directly or indirectly.

      • haileTG

        Hi Acria,
I understand what you mean but as a general rule that should and is the case with any invasion. But only to count on past bad blood to defend a nation is rather a curse, not a gift. What if the Sudan station troops? What if KSA or UAE do so? Is it commitment to your land or just not Ethiopia but couldn’t care less for anyone else?

        • Acria

          Selam haileTG,

I think we are being unfair to Mr. Bahlebi’s other ideas. He has brought some brilliant ideas how to depose this unhinged dictator of ours. The idea of Ethiopian soldiers stationed in Eritrea is just another small complement to unite the people of Eritrea to hopefully wakeup and start liberating Eritrea from our DIA and his sycophants. Let’s not forget why we fought for our independence since 1962. Nevertheless, it doesn’t necessary mean we are going to fight the Ethiopians per say now. On the contrary, the Ethiopian soldiers might help the Eritrean masses to have an easy coup d’état instead. The Eritrean people don’t want any war with anybody anymore, especially with Ethiopia.

          • haileTG

            Hi Acria,

I think his overall work is great. I hope that it finds receptive ears in those close enough to effect it. But whatever we say or do we need to be careful and not careless. Our history with Ethiopia has been intertwined for good and for bad. Let”s steer it in the right direction.

          • Acria

            Selam haileTG,

It looks like we in the diaspora have ideas but we can’t implement them on a practical level. People inside Eritrea have the capacity but are unable to do anything…..they just gave up! Therefore, ideas alone cannot change anything if they can’t find ‘receptive ears’, to borrow your phrase. It is very sad what is going on in Eritrea. Eritrea is bleeding in human resources: just recently many have crossed to Ethiopia. Sadly many are recent graduates of higher education. That is a curse, for sure.

Therefore, Bahlebi’s ideas are great but impractical. The main guiding principle for any movement is when you have support at home. As long as we don’t have reliable support at home, the only option is to make peace with Ethiopia when it serves both peoples interests: regardless of boundary or country. We should participate in the democratization of the Horn of Africa to create pressure on our DIA and on Dr. Abiy’s administration to make forced reform. I believe that is the only practical option we have at this time in our history.

          • haileTG

            Hi Acria,

I understand that sometimes things are so bad in many fronts that retreat appears to be the only relive and safety. But remember that for every cloud there is a silver lining. Our quest, however seemingly impossible, was never wrong. The violation against the dignity and rights of the human and of the person must be stopped is our singular call. There is no substitute for that no matter the highs and lows of the road travelled. It is sacred principle that has no second. PFDJ and its supporters are wrong and we are right. We should not doubt the correctness of our ground. It is not us who should compromise because there is nothing to compromise on basic dignity. It has to get really dark to see the stars shining. But our people seem to be short tempered and impatient and keep trying their hand on many other distractions as migration. We need to speak with certitude that ultimately there is no other outcome than our long held quest. We should not be surprised by every raising wave or passing cloud. Stay firmly rooted on the rightness of our case and the right conditions will surely araise.

            Selam haileTG

      Selam Haile TG,

It is really sad there are folks who still go to the same old well.
This time around it will be rejected by Eritreans themselves. You didn’t give it a second thought to say, in a clear voice, NO. For that thank you.

      Mr. K.H

      • haileTG

        Selam K.H.

You are right. Even going further than that Eritreans have rejected such tendecy all along. If they weren’t to reject it we wouldn”t be here now despite what we went through for more than a century. It shows you how the bond is solid and strong at the base.

    • Selam haileTG,

It is unfortunate that the writer could present his own bias and personal sentiment as that of the eritrean people. I would rather call it hopelessness and frustration.

Eritrean elites tried to form an eritrean nationalism founded on hating ethiopia and ethiopians with a gun pointed at their head, and the blunder committed by ethiopian rulers has helped them to a certain extent. Nevertheless, the hate was skin deep and never permanent.

Do the last events show the writer that eritreans hate ethiopians? Could he be blind to the way asmarinos received the ethiopian pm? Many say that asmara saw such event, first, on independence, and the second was the visit by the ethiopian pm. What about the 400 eritreans crossing the border to ethiopia every day and about 150K who are already in refugee camps, if we leave out those who are already living within the ethiopian society? What does he say about the anger of young eritreans who are now in ethiopia, for the lie eritrean elites and the regime told them for so long about ethiopians, and destroyed their lives? Do all these mean to him hate.

Bringing out old hidden skeletons from the basement to use them when everything is changing in front of their eyes, show how much stuck they are in the past, and how much they are hindering eritrea from moving forward.

The irony is that when he says “Eritrean nationalism is founded more on hating Ethiopia than loving Eritrea per se”, this statement shows us that there is no eritrean nationalism as such, as much as he is concerned, or otherwise, it is founded on a superficial foundation, and everything is about hating ethiopia. This is the first example of nationalism where love for one’s own country is in question, or not deeply embedded in the psych, as he says, and founded only on hate for others. Even the nazis loved germany, and fascists loved italy, although they hated almost everybody else. Nothing could be more weird. What he said about eritrean nationalism is equivalent to defaming eritrean sentiment to ethiopians.

The gift that can mobilize the eritrean people, as he says, is already there. Only that he does not want to look in the eye at the elephant in the room, the ethiopian soldiers in badme. He doesn’t have to wait for ethiopian boots in massawa.

Fortunately, ethiopians know very well that eritreans except the elites (even then only some of them, who try to use eritreans for their selfish political ambitions) do not hate ethiopians. Unlike some eritrean elites, ordinary eritreans know very well that they are bound to live side by side with their ethiopian brothers and sisters. Fortunately, the peoples of ethiopia and eritrea know much much better.

(Sorry for directing my comment to you. I have no idea what else the writer could have said. Thank you for being fair, unbiased and a democrat.)

      • haileTG

        Thank you brother Horizon,

Ultimately, it all boils down to recognizing that our best interests are in each others best interest. Fear projected into the past is nothing but anger and sadness, while fear projected to the future is anxiety and mistrust. But as you said if we look at what is here and now, we have a lot to be optimistic about both people. Let us be conscious of that and things will move in the right direction.

    • B. Malk

Selam HaileTG, thank you for the comment. The translation, however, is not entirely correct. “Eritrean nationalism is founded more on hating Ethiopia than loving Eritrea per se”? Not really. Be it for a political consumption or out of willful historical blindness, some people tend to paint a rosy historical narrative. I would love to learn if there was a time where Eritrea and Ethiopia had coexisted in peace and harmony(with the exception of 1991-1997). Ethiopian history of aggression, violence, raid, and massacre did not start during or after the illegitimate federation years.

        Merhaba Bahlbi,

Winston Churchill once said “I know history will be fair to me because I intend to write it myself”. Our entire Ghedli was a singularly pointed effort for independence from Ethiopia. Hence, reality was distorted to some degree to fit that scenario. The people of Ethiopia and Eritrea not only experienced unbroken chain of conflict and turmoil, but also experienced continuous and uninterrupted bond and closeness at the same time. The experience of the century was not one of conflict alone or peace alone. It was substantially influenced by both conditions. It is because of such reality that IA regime was literally maintained tight grip by appealing to the conflict side of the equation for the last 17 years and was able to flip instantly to the point of declaring we are one people by simply turning to the other half of the equation that is closeness and bonding.

Throughout the long history you alluded to, Eritreans have engaged in so much horrendous betrayal of each other in almost every single step of the way. I don’t know however if it was betrayal of each other as such or they simply haven’t fully bought to the Eritrea concept completely. The first referendum resulted in 48% choosing for union with Ethiopia. Going back to the era you mentioned, Raisi Weldenkiel was no saint and a criminal in today’s HR environment. Many Eritrean Derg officials or even HS dignitaries were on the dolling out side of the occupation. Even during 1991-1998 IA was more of a confederation guy. It is only 2001 – 2018 that it had become a death sentence (so to speak) crime to have anything to do with Ethiopia. That was done purely to satisfy the evil wishes of IA. To demonstrate that the IA regime left out Ethiopia in a song dedicated to East Africa during the Asmara Cecafa games of U17. How childish but it shows you that the so called permanent enemity between Ethiopia and Eritrea is only one side of the story, one that was imposed on rather than willed by Eritreans.

Coming back to current times, from tactical point of view, we need to hold our ground. For the last 17 years, the Eritrean struggle for justice was cheated by making out the opposition pro Ethiopia. Now in a sudden twist of things, the opposition that paid so much for the peace of both peoples, is contemplating to ditch this approach because IA’s regime has changed sides. Why would the opposition abandon the ground? It is perfectly plausible to push for democracy in Eritrea and peace and reconciliation to take root with Ethiopia. That would require us to have a sober look at our changing positions throughout our history. Appealing to narrow anti-Ethiopia sentiment may be out of date now and unhelpful in any rate.

Otherwise, I enjoyed your article, it is very thoughtful and practical at all levels.

Selam meKusi (HaileTG), B-Malk & all,

MeKusi, I agree with all your your respinse to B-Malk and ti Bahlbi as well. Perfectly put.
B-Malk, I don’t agree with the way you framed the Eritrean Ethiopian relationship before the 20th century, particularly with the sentence that says “It is also worth noting that most of the Eritrean population welcomed the Italian colonial occupation in search of protection from the Abyssinian warlords”. Yes there were Abyssinian warlords suffocating the life of other people, in this case the people beyond-Mereb (Eritrea), more than they suffocated their own people on whom their muscle depended. But they were equally merciless when it comes to their bellies. However, presenting the beyond-Mereb (Eritrean people) or the whole whole Eritrean people at large as people who preferred the foreign more than their own oppressors looks like a simplified story tailored to substantiate a solid differentiating factor between the oppressor (Ethiopia) and the oppressed (Eritrean) people as you put it. The Abyssinian people and environs were in constant floods of war, famine, locast invasion and warlord taxations for centuries. When war breaks, they were looking for the immediate end and the coming of a peace so that they plough their land and harvest for the next war. Meaning, when a leader looses, everyone submits to the winner. It was unwritten law. ‘Eritreans’ faught & resisted against the Italians as much as they can on their own way or together with the rulers of the period, Alula & Yohannes. Once Yohannes lost his life in Metema and the tide turned, several of the Eritrea nobility gave up to Italians to be almost immediatelly sent to NaKura to their certain death. The Italians knew that keeping these fierce and rebellous people around was dangerous. We shouldn’t present these courageous forefathers as naive lambs who went to the hyenas den. Italian colonization was an inhumane rule that devastated our country. Not only leaders of beyond-Mereb, but many of the Tigray warlords changed their allegiances between Italians and Alula/Yohannes and vice versa several times. For all them it was a question of staying alive whether we consider it as unpatriotic or not.

Ahlan HaileTG and HaileS, (Bahlbi and Aklil)
First let me register my admiration for my two talented and extremely intelligent friends: Bahlbi and Aklil.

Generally, what Haile is saying seems true on the surface–there were no Eritreans who preferred the Italians to the warlords. I would like to point your attention to something I know from family history, stories that I have included in “Of Kings and Bandits” and here is an excerpt from the book:

“They faced a similar fate. But the Saho tribes had other Muslims lands behind their back—Dankalia and the land of Naib, the open Red Sea. The Jeberti had no exit, surrounded by Abyssinian chieftains, their numbers decreased because of exile and uprooting. In later years, the Protestants and the Catholics went through the same fate—Yohannes wanted his kingdom to adhere only to one faith, his faith.”
            _______

Asmelash felt that only under Janhoi did his people become equal to Europeans and not relegated to an inferior status, and Janhoi had promised more modernization. Asmelash resented the Italians fascists and resented the people who had flooded to support the Italian invaders, the same people who now fiercely opposed Janhoi.

[Asmelash’s] grandfather had explained why the Muslims had flooded to the village of Htmlo to enlist in the Italian colonial army: “They saw an opportunity to be armed and drive Abyssinian chieftains off the land.”

            Asmelash asked, “Why?”

“The king ordered them to convert to his religion or go into exile.” He went into a deep thought and then added, “If the Italian occupation had delayed a decade, today there wouldn’t be any Muslims left around here,” he had explained.

That is “QunTaro” of the mostly untold story. Therefore, I believe we have to see the topic within context though context could have different narrations depending on how we see things. I also think our intellectual capacity has failed us (add the so many taboos in telling our history). But there is a lot to be expected from our scholars. We need to delve deep into our history to understand and explain our current situation, our predicament.

Selam HaileTG, Horizon,Haile S, Saleh, Acria and others,
Thank you for your input. It is very enlightening. The historical ups and downs between Eritrea and Ethiopia are too long and too complicated to simplify it in a comment section. HaileTG, I agree with many of your points. Yes,like many African countries, Eritrea and Ethiopia may have had “continuous and uninterrupted bond and closeness ..“ Yes, we have some cultural, linguistic and religious similarities. But when we speak about Eritrean and Ethiopian socio-cultural, political, linguistic, and religious similarities or historical connections, we tend to narrate a homogenized version of Eritrean ethnic, religious, cultural and genealogical backgrounds. But not all Eritrean ethnic groups have historical/cultural/religious/ linguistic connections with Ethiopia. Not all Eritrean ethnic groups/regions see Ethiopia through the same prism. But again, for Ethiopia, the highlanders are Eritrea. When Ethiopians describe Eritrea and Eritreans, they tend to take Eritrean highland as a representative of Eritrea (ኣንድ ሃይማኖት ኣንድ ህዝብ). Abiy was welcomed by few Eritreans from Asmara but here is how he described it. “የኤርትራ ህዝብ የተቀበለን ኣቀባበል በኢትዮጵያ ኣገራችን ያላቸው ፍቅር መግለጫ ነው.” This is because, historically, the Christian highlanders had shown some sympathy for Ethiopia and sense of belonging with Ethiopia. I strongly believe that the highlanders were largely responsible for Eritrean federation. If you had a chance to go through the pre-federation survey, you would see that most of the 48% you mentioned was from highland Eritrea. Hence, the“Bevin-Sforza Plan” project was orchestrated to divide Eritrea across religious lines with a plan to give Sudan the Muslim lowlanders(west). As you may know, after the second world war, Ethiopia had shopped around for ports and potential federation of Somalia or Djibouti with Ethiopia but they both rejected it. Like many other African colonies who were given their independence, all Italian colonies were given their independence (Libya and Somalia) except Eritrea. Now, reading some of the comments, I have sensed that some people have misunderstood my message. I want to clarify one thing. The historical tension, resentment and hatred was not against particular Ethiopian ethnic group(s). The struggle for independence was not against Ethiopian ethnic groups(population). It was all against Ethiopian leadership. But as a political rallying point, the notion of “Amharay Adgi” was necessitated to project the resentment and anger towards a homogenized enemy: the Amhara. The 80 plus Ethiopian Ethnic groups had probably participated in the struggle for Eritrean occupation, but in the eyes of Eritreans, they were all Amharas.
My comment regarding Eritrean reaction to different foreign threats shouldn’t be taken as” Eritreans would rise up to defend their country from Ethiopia but not from others..” Due to the history of war, betrayal, abuse, aggression and violence of Ethiopian governments against the Eritrean people, Ethiopia is viewed as a historical enemy of Eritrea and Sudan as a natural ally of Eritrea. So, I believe Eritrean reaction to any threats from the aforementioned countries is more likely to be different. Saleh, HaileTG and others, we may not have a concrete data as to the numerical figure of the population who preferred Italy to Abyssinian aggression but there is sufficient number of literature on the Eritrean reception of Italy and why. The evidence suggest that many Eritreans have indeed welcomed Italy for protection from the Abyssinian aggression. By the time they learned that the Italians were worse than the Abyssinian, it was too late. Please read Prof. Abdulkader Mohammed Saleh (2013). Competing Identities and the Emergence of Eritrean Nationalism between 1941 and 1952. He has done an extensive research on the subject matter.

            Dear B Malk,

In your presentation of things, I feel,
            1) historical social happenings are mixed up, (like “cut and past” style.
            2) untrue narrations are tolerated and further concocted (you mentioned “Amhara…”; the interesting thing is you can go over such distortions and misconcepts comfortably. How disastrous it is.
            3) Do you expect pmaaa should send statistician or tenth graders to head-count “how many there were” in his Asmara reception (from Blen tribe or Hamasien Highlands, just to comfort you)?
            ….
for the sake of scientific curiosity, I would think, the contemporary Eritrean political dynamics is primarily driven by:
            4) the internal geopolitics of the country,
            5) new population centers, with new players of political challenges, (just check the junior schools student number distribution across the nation),
            6) The unwillingness of the current government to make fundamental revisions on any of its major policies (be it within or outside Eritrea–except (probably the imposed? peace agreement on PIA/PFDJ),…..
            7) between your line of thinking, and that of the PIA/pfdj, there is one key striking similarity: a) for all sicknesses of our society, you want to invoke the “Ethiopian against the Eritrean souverginity”, as the best unifying medication.
            b) The PIA/pfdj (as we observe things today) want to continue their StaSi concept/ideology based nation building by enslaving their’s own power center, namely their fellow population; now some one may ask:
b.1) How could the Eritrean government reconcile its deed at home and regional developments/new agreements, it signed, across the region.
b.2) my theory is, (for all practical purposes) it is impossible to reconcile the new Eritrean regional peace treaty with what is happening in the country.
b.3) So, probably the pia and co. are telling untruth to the new peace partners; or they are doing it rather to their people; or they are doing it to “every one they meet on the road”. You simply may call them “the masters of deceptions”.
            8) The interesting thing is, you are doing exactly the same thing–albeit from a weak position.

            Thanks

      • Selam B. Malk.,

This chain of fallacies show that unfortunately you see things superficially to prove your wrong assumption about ethio-eritrean relations throughout history. Saying that “eritreans accepted italian colonialism and enslavement to protect themselves from abyssinian warlords”, is worse than saying “eritrean nationalism is founded on hating ethiopia”. In addition, when you speak of “Eritreans would not react the same way if Djibouti, Sudan or Yemen threatens Eritrea.”, i fail to understand where this really fits, for aggression is the same wherever it comes from, unless you want to say that the ones you mentioned above are incapable of launching a threat to eritrea.

At least as much as highland eritreans are concerned, these are people with more or less the same genes, language, religion, culture and tradition, with those to the south of the mereb, otherwise abyssinians and habeshas themselves, whether they accept or not, and you try to show that they are completely different, as if the river mereb is an ocean hundreds of miles wide that separated the two adjacent regions for centuries up to now with impassable body of water. There were movements and settlements of people throughout history, as rightly pointed out by others.

Simply, you fail to understand that prescribing the same poison and not even medicine (i.e. hate and war) continuously over and over again, when they have hurt the people so much, is futile and insensitive. One should try for a change, peace, love, reconciliation and rapprochement. These are in the air today. This is the new way forward for the two people.

Egoistic position entertained by some hardliners will never soften the predicament of the ordinary eritrean back home, nor that of an ethiopian. Let us wish a better day for both people. What is the use of complaining that they have yet to see peaceful coexistence based on mutual respect, trust, and understanding, as long as the same hardliners are becoming the stumbling block on the people’s way as they try to move forward.
