No culture is an island. Many countries tried and all of them failed. The french in the 70s allocated percentage of English songs to be aired on the radio, that did not work. There are underground rock bands in China and other Asian countries and have numerous followers. The good thing is to teach the bad and good side every thing new.

Mahmuday; what is up? I heard your were in vacation the place i am forbidden to mention : – ) I don’t want the toothless Semere after me. any way how was your vacation? i hope you enjoyed it.
Mahmuday, I came around this incredible young lady. I couldn’t believe the talent of this young woman. shame on me for not discovering her before this week. i am so proud. you see, not every thing is lost. it is the few times i am moved.

wow ! this is the best gift you have ever given to AT. Nitriccay, really the she is gifted and the story reminds me back our gedli days. Who could imagined our Gedli will not end after 1991? Why still we have similar stories are recorded now after 20 + years again?

    • Mahmud Saleh

      Nitrikay;

Eritreans are resilient, that’s why you see open attacks against their very identity. Our enemies (be careful, beautiful Ethiopia and its people are not our enemies, but you can gauge who I am talking about..No…No…TPLF and its people are not our enemies either. I will comment on Aboy Sebhat on A separate thread). There is a segment that will forever be our enemies. This segment wakes up every morning and see our country standing, and it wonders, what the heck is the secret? Well, it’s the people, a people who have passed through the toughest time, suck it up. Yes, we have youth who blossom under difficult situation; we have teachers who do their best under difficult situations, case in point the advancement of Eritrean literature (particularly Tigrigna), We have doctors engineers who serve their people under the harshest times imaginable. These youth are our hope. If it were for PFDJ policies, international and regional conspiratorial criminality on Eritrea, We would not be talking today about a nation called Eritrea. Yes, we are resilient, tough, we have been tested time and again. However, it seems, We haven’t seen the test we are going through now. Is our resilience and unity going to be translated into building a future our grand kids could be proud of? The test of our time is how to get rid of this menace called PFDJ and install a sustainable political structure? Just imagine if our youth and Eritreans could unleash their potential! Be proud of your forefathers, and be active in a meaningful way. Your father can help you ways of helping these youth, ways of giving them hope in their country. I consider all those who are contributing to the common good of Eritrea my heroes. This young lady is definitely my hero. The following is bio of Hanna Gual MendeQ when she was in Bittmhrti sewra band, she was killed in 1985 ( wefri baHri Negash), she was beautiful; she was energetic and full of hope. To save Semere from a bout of allergy, I am not going to transcribe the lyrics.

the last time I wear military uniform was in October 15, 2001 dear mahmuday and I undressed them for good at that day.

    • saay7

      PS:

The theme of the song is gratitude for longevity. There was a 70s Amharic song with similar theme that I asked Encyclopedia Eyob for help but he has failed me. So now it goes public; maybe Kokhob Selam will identify the artist:

      Edme Degu
      Mesenbet
      Kfu degun layenbet
      Saay
PS: Eyob has a pet peeve about Eritreans forget the letter “n” when writing in Amharic. Sprinkle generously.

        Sal,

I wanted to punish you for last week you ignoring the wonderful Tsedenya by putting up a really horrible song, BUT for the sake of good people like Kokhob Selam and Sem, I decided to leave it with just warning and instead my music Saturday opens with this really good Mamila and Kichini Wolyta/Amharic mix song…one of my favorites….

        • saay7

          Eyobai:

I think what you wanted to write was: “I wanted to punish you for last week, and here I am punishing you.” Looks like Teddy Afro has spawned imitators by truckloads…

Now, ante tara, if you want to hear how reggae music is done Ethio style, well, y’hewlh:

            Sal,

Huh?! What the freak was that? What happened to Jano Band? First of all Gemechu (the base guitarist, who for some unknown reason decided to the weirdest Regge rap ever, should NEVER open his mouth to sing. Second, again, what the freak was that? ugggggggg….

Here is the ‘Real’ Jano band I know…
Look how amazingly musically talented they are. This LIVE performance was recorded with a cell phone in Gonder. yet, 1) you clearly see that their LIVE performance is almost identical with their studio recording. 2) their improvising ability to fit their audience is amazing. This particular song is about Wello, but some how they modified some difficult to modify lyrics particularly some stanzas that are constructed for a specific area were reconstructed on the spot and managed to capture the audience. This is the Jano Band I like. The one you brought out, I have no idea what it is…

          • Eyob Medhane

            Kokheb,

I am afraid you are wrong on this one…Jano band actually is VERY Ethiopian and Habesha…They have a lot of traditional songs for your likes, but also they are very socially conscious. One of their songs actually became a rallying cry for women that have been brutally abused in Arab countries, it created such awareness for others not to go to Arab countries and subject themselves to such barbaric treatment that gulf Arabs are known for to human beings that they happen to have an upper hand on…

            Listen to it..

I assure you, your poems are:

      Eternal,
      Omnipresent,
      omnipotent,

      they are inspirational,
      they are busters
      they are enablers
      they are like rivers

      Your poems have the essence,
      they have life
      they have morality
      they have ethics

Your poems are like atomic energy
Your poems are guided by natural law
your poems are much more than the gravitational forces
      they are from deep inside

Only one truth is within your poems
      And this is “LOVE”

yes Kokhob, you have the torch
      Light it always
so that, so that we can pursue our way!

      hawka

This is exclusive for Mahmuday and others can eavesdrop too 🙂

He once had stint in Sudan. Altough he is humble about it he speaks Arabic and Tigriniya, also his mother’s tongue and as you can glean from his comments most of the time he is persuasive, I say most because in one area he is not. Figure it out because today is Sabath and I am fasting so cannot say it;-)

But in his stint, the trailblazer Sudanese female singer was so charmed by Mahmuday’s elquent in 3 different languages, she calls him “Hamada”, an endearment for his name and she sang for him the following song. Word had it that he over stayed his stint, but back then the concept of “mkublal” was not invented and nothing happened.:-)

Nitrikay had more than a reason to belittle Canada, I visit it regularly, but this time it was just miserable. Rain …rain…and rain. I tried my best to find my friend Semere, I checked out all Habesha restaurants, Punjabi businesses, the city is full of them. I approached every walking Habesha asking if anyone of them was Semere, but they would all say,” No, hell, Awet nHafash!!” Finally, a sweet elderly Eritrean lady said to me ” tewsakhitu, he hasn’t been doing well since he returned from Rome. Lately, he’s been in a yet another project to politically evangelize the last hold-out dawit. I don’t think you will find him, but good luck,” she said. Well, the only guy I know who can flush him out is in OHIO, investigating the presence of a white guy in a Habesha restaurant. He has not made a headway in his investigation. So, I will keep listening to Hanan Blublu AlHabeshiya until things clear out.

            Newerta ya Hamada:
Do put words in Nitricc’s moth he never spoke ill of Canada;-)
About rain: If I were you ezi’s nAdina and I would do rekA rekAtein for that to happen. Imagine if that rain was in Sahel how life would have been easier for you in Eritrea. You engage dawit and you gave up, and I advices Tes to do so
This reminds me of some Arabic writer who said the following 😉
            Ahrebu min rahmet rebi
            wo ahbu al- fitna
            wo Akrahu al-haq

    Eyobai:

    Congratulations on this:

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-10-19/ethiopia-s-gebru-wins-beijing-marathon-amid-hazardous-smog.html

Berhane Gebru should demand hazard pay because of Beijing’s awful pollution level:

The Air QualityIndex in the city central area is at “severely polluted levels” of around 225 to 245 today, with the gauge at more than 400 in some areas, according to Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau. The U.S. Embassy said on its website air quality is “hazardous” today.

Accepted, with respect. I may expand it later. I like the way you put it in Tigrgna. I wish they lead the way, but too often that doesn’t happen.

    Hi Eyobay:
And Mahmuday as well and Sal
Before I break the weekend fasting here is a Tigrayit lesson for you and it is in the name of the Ethiopian singer Neway Debebe.

Neway in Amharic means, I think wealth and in Tigrayit it means wealth of animals ( as the Tigrayit singer Humde Abdella said, atalna, wo ensana wo ahanan;-)). So my theory is that Amharic and Tigrayit used to be one language before you guys seceded by introducing chauffeur and bantelon and qeshim:-).

Also in Geeze “Neway” means the same as the Tigrayit meaning;-)

      Semere wed Abuye Andom

Do you know that this guy was huge in the clubs of Sahel, you call it, demudmu occasions..or whatever. Anyway, as I fought Ethiopia, my Ethiopian artists selection would be:

      Efrem Tamru=1 (of all time)

      Mahmud Ahmed=2

      Neway debebe= 3

      Tsehaye Yowhans= 4

      Hirut Bekele=5

Tilahun was not my favorite, sorry friends.

regarding the language: I think there is a myth; just because you find some words common to both languages, you can’t say they are closer to each other than the relationship b/n Tigrina and Amargna. Usually people will bring one example: esat also biet; but those are also Tigrigna words. I believe neway is also Tigrigna; but not sure. KS are you there or HTG? For instance read the following and tell me which language is closer to Amargna. Of curse, this is not for my friend nitrikay, but since it’s Addis, he should be fine.

“አዲስ አበባ፤ ጥቅምት 7/ 2007(ዋኢማ) -የአዲስ አበባ ከተማ መንገዶች ባለሥልጣን በ139 ሚሊዮን ብር ወጪ የድልድይ ሥራ እንዲሁም ሁለት የመንገድ ዲዛይንና የክትትል ሥራዎችን ለማከናወን ከሶስት አገር በቀል ድርጅቶች ጋር ስምምነት ተፈራረመ።

But remember these are Sister languages, at least that’s what we hear.

        Wedi Saleh:
Thanks. Well. I was not making the point Amharic is closer to Tigrayit than to Tigriniya. But at one point all thee are the derivative of Geeze. Also I was teasing Eyobay about secession:-)
I know Neway was popular Sahel night clubs, but not in the demudmu sessions though because these sessions can include tera tegadalai, in the late eighties, Amharic was forbidden in the name of culture domination to embolden Eritrean cultural renaissance , but some tegadalti joked that it was forbidden cus tegadalti were defecting because they remembered their exes as the love songs reverberated in the mountains of Sahel;-)
In 19988 a couple of friends and I were driven in landcruiser for a half hour in the vicinity of Ghirmaika when we visited there to see br. 52 cultural troupe and all the way the music was Amharic. Wedi Sheika sang baburay and Elsa Kidane sang “weldi kindey tinafequ” and we saw qeyah mendiley,a love letter was delivered to a tegadali by the Eritrean wind:-)
The problem with Tigrayit now and after EPLF took over is not that it is borrowing from Arabic or Tigriniya for political/social/economical diction, but it “extinguishing” exiting valid ones and replacing them with either Tigrinya or Arabic. Good example of this as I put it to your before can be found in wedi Sheik’s song “hayet”. He says “itaqsno abayka” This is wrong or at least confusing, “mqsan” in Tigrinya is do not give peace, in Tigrayit “aqsin” means out as in the light is out or extinguish. Borrowing and realinging/reconfiguring are two differ thing. Mi tibe? 🙂

As an ambassador of shaebia in the republic of Awate, a correction is in need.
Yes, there was a “counter cultural invasion” movement which was short lived because tegadalay would not listen to that lame excuse. This was in early 80s, there was no active confiscations of Amharic cassettes nor punishments to those who did not heed the call; it was a sort of educational seminars. With the coming of Tekle Hiwket, Eng. Asgedom, Barya, Alamin, Hagos Berhane/and his brother Sami, it was forgotten. It was not done to insulate tegadelti from being influenced by it but by a fear of “cultural invasion”, similar to what we hear now on the media..ናይ ምዕራብ ባህሊ….you can see how they ridicule cultural peculiarities of Eritrean visitors in dramas, particularly Nitrikay type hip-hop dressings and bodily languages. Remember: tegadalay spent all those years under continuous propaganda; both Adiis/and Asmara radio stations were available, pamphlets by air, nightly megaphone propaganda and music across trenches..Durg litrature was available after every captured enemy position…One thing is clear, Eritreans fought Ethiopian regimes, not Ethiopian people.

Mahmuday, speaking similarities between Amharic and Tigrigna, let me tell you my story. I was in Columbus, Ohio last weekend for a day. I was there looking for my white friend Thomas and no where to be found. After giving up my search, I had a little time to kill before my flight and I decided to check the Habesha restaurant. So, I went to this restaurant last time I was there the restaurant used to be called café Luna and this time around the name has changed to Dukom restaurant. So, nothing big, I start looking at menu and I was surprised to see the name of the foods that were Witten in Amharic and Tigrigna interchangbily
For example, it reads Yebeg-Kulwa instead of Yebeg-Tibs. The wall of the restaurant is covered with Ethiopian posters, yet Abraham Aforki’s music was blasting through the big speakers that were staged in the resturant. I was a little confused about the mix up. I notice the waiter is some kind of Vietnams, not the typical habesha women. When the waiter came to take my order, I want to ask her why the menu was written in both languages but I can not ask that kinds of to a Vietnamese. So, I just sit there and wait for my food. While I was eating a white guy came and asked how the food was. I say good! I was wondering why a white man is asking me about habesha food, before I had any chance to chat, his cell phone rung and he excused him self and left. Now my curiosity got the best out of me and I asked her who the white guy was and she told me he is the owner of the restaurant. I tried to put it together and I couldn’t.
A menu written in mix with Amharic and Tigrigna.
        A Vietnamese waiter
        A white guy an owner
        Amharic flag and posters
        Eritrean Music
Ethiopian city for the name of the restaurant.
Mahmuday; You figure it out because I can’t. Where is Thomas to clear these things up?
I am hoping someone from there can clear up and tell us what is up?

        • Amanuel Hidrat

          Nitrikay,

How difficult it is? It only reflect that we are all from the same human race and living mixed everywhere. Nothing big out of it.

          Amanuel

        • Mahmud Saleh

          Nitrikay;
You never fail me, my boy, that’s an appetizer. Now, I don’t really want to go in between you and Thomas, wherever he is, I wish him all the best. But It’s really an amazing discovery. I have never seen a white owner of Habesha restaurant; that that may say something about this spicy Injera after all. May be, just may be, we may find Injera tacos in food stores. But, there is a but; how if the white owner was a husband of a Habesha lady? What if that Habesha lady could be a member of Awatista family? I mean you have got to investigate this further. How if the Vietnamese waiter is a former girlfriend of your friend Semere? They say the community is very large up north. What if Amanuel Hidrat set this up for you to ease you anxiety on Rahwa and dedebit thing. I mean, I am just curious, because it’s a tough call Nitrikay. I remember years back watching Scooby Doo show, I used similar strategy to uncover the mystery but to no avail. But I will tell you this: it’s a nice story.

          • Nitricc

Mahmuday, I have no idea where Thomas is but the reason I was looking for him was that he took away my baby from me. Do you remember the beauty I introduce to you with her picture? Well, he got her. So, out jealousy and rage I flow all the way to get my baby back to no avail. Anyway, you know what Mahmuday; I would have loved to see who the cook was. Hack, it could have been a Chinese for all we know and could have completed the full circle. For sure some one will clear that up for us. What ever it is one thing is clear; humanity has no borders. Every one is every where.

          • Mahmud Saleh

            Nitrikay

Well I, have been looking for something that soothes your broken heart, and here ,I invite you to listen to Sam Cooke, the dude was a soul star way back in the old days, but I’m pretty sure you will enjoy him. Hey, the last sentence sums up all, you are truly a fine man when TK and Rahwa are not around; I have no idea how quickly your blood boils when these guys show up, think of this: ” What ever it is one thing is clear; humanity has no borders. Every one is every where.” That’s today’s best quote. So, next time call them by their true names and expose them individually, instead of letting them get away with that generic name: Tigray. For good or bad ,Tigray is going to be next to us; we just can’t excise it out. Now back to the music.

I have the answer for you, sir.
Columbus is such a hidden gem nobody can understand how it became such a cosmopolitan city in the mid west. The main reasons are the Ohio State University and the world renowned research center Battelle.

You must have been in Columbus for the wedding, eh?
The owner of Dukem who came to ask you how everything was is an Ethiopian thru and thru. As for the music, every Ethi and Eri restaurants play all kinds of music . If you go to an Ethi owned joint you are likely Jemal Romodan and Helen Melles along with Tilahun and other Ethiopian singers.
And if you go to an Eri owned place, you will be listening to Ethiopian as well as Eritrean music.

          • Nitricc

Hey, Welde ab, thanks for the replay. Although, I wish you could have expand a little more on your answer. So, are you saying that guy wasn’t white? Or you are saying (yes he is white but Ethiopian national) I am confused. What I saw was a fit white guy with eye glass, I will say in his early 40’s???. Anyway you made me laugh when you say I must have attended a wedding. Well, if I was in a wedding I am wondering why I will go to a restaurant. I have never been in a wedding but I am guessing food is served in every wedding. So, to answer to your curiosity, No, there was no wedding I had short work visit to your beloved the Ohio state University. By the way, a university or school should not be that big.
Now, if we are talking about the same guy then tell me how is a white man converted to an Ethiopian? You see you left me with more questions.
            Anyway; thanks Welda ab.

    Dear Mahmuday;

Today is Saturday and following in the steps St. Sal of California it is fasting from politics day and here is song for your and I have a favor to ask once you enjoy it, please send it to “Welet AQbella” 🙂

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIXrcr5RvEE

“welet Aqbella”: This is the Andomite encryption and since I know that your Trigrayit is rusty like your Tigrininya and Arabic if you do not know what this means Sal has the private key to decrypt it 🙂

And here is for Sal for decryption services: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YST8bKd6iQc
    Singer Aklilu Foto (Tefeno)

Tefeno was one of the veterans of the colorful EPLF cultural band. Although dwarfed by the great Fihira in his golden time (and by golden years I mean before he sang Romay werhi wetsiA bsemay), Tefeno turned out to be formidable in his own right later: he bloomed late, he started out singing Ogba Ghabir’s “zuramo Hagerka (borderline lazy lyrics Geo lessons;-), a funny and ladies man Tefeno left Eritrean early after independence and this one is my fav. He also sang Sebene and memorable line in it for me was: “Sebene nkedat shemshemit ntelamat delhamet”. Sebene is the name of his wife and his mom also. Slowly, after Fihira’s star faded because of his more than once alleged attempt to defect and he was frozen from the band and assigned to “kebid bret” Tefeno covered Fihira and slowly had a few of this won, one of his memorable one was in the eve of independence, “Fanus brki lilo”

          Just to return the favor
When you enjoy this song try to pay attention:

1/ to the voice of Tefeno, background keyboard, tempo, lyrics, Aron’s guitar….it’s just wonderfully composed. They didn’t have fancy studio (I remember their rehearsal underground in Arag). saay, forgive them for any boo-boo.
2/ to the nature’s elements and to the “fight or flight” the singer illustrates by the lyrics. It depicts a sentinel using all his nocturnal senses, scheduled guard who watches over his unit and designated sector, usually at night while her/his comrades take a nap; now, just imagine the cold dry winds of the highlands/mountains of Sahel, occasional random fire exchanges, rumbles of artillery rounds, a blast of a land mine just meters between you and your enemy, and then you have the beautiful moon, the stars are your company, you know them all and their celestial positions; time is measured by looking at them; shooting stars and satellites roaming the sky; you may be thinking why you are there, where your mom..dad…wife….kids could be at that moment..yet still focused using mostly your ears because you know the safety of that position and your comrades rests on you….this song reminds me all these these.

      Hayes Semere
      shereftena ya muAlem.
Now, TaniQo is one of my favs. So many good musicians and singers have come out after him, unfortunately, most of them I don’t know; you can blame it on shifts in music taste which I could easily blame on, let’s call it growing. TaniQo stands out as the man who rattled the comfort zone of those artists who had established their career in and on ghedli themes. I give him credit for opening the door wide for a lot of budding artists. I have a good guess on the answer to your riddle “welet aqbella,” but will pass it on to saay.
On Fihira; you have some factual errors.
a/ He tried only one time, but after that he never tried to defect despite having had multiple opportunities. We know his talents, he’s’s also down-to-earth man, very polite and considerate. Fihira is to ghedli music as Bereket, Alamin, Osman…Haile Gebru…are to modern Eritrean music. His place is secured.
I don’t know why you don’t like “Romay” ወርሒ ወጺኣ ብሰማይ, ወርሒ ወጺኣ ብባሕሪ፡ ወርሒ ወጺኣ ብጎቦ…ወርሒ ወጺኣ ብፖርትሱዳን ወ ፈሽ ኣበለተኒ። I don’t know when you returned back to Asmara after independence, but it was a huge hit. It remains one of my all time favorites.
On Tefeno: He’s a talented musician, songwriter and singer. He had already established himself when he was in one of the brigades’ cultural troupe ( I believe Brigade 31) before coming to the central cultural troupe in 1981, as you said he did most of Fihira ( after that unfortunate incident) and Ogbagabr’s songs too. But he is one of the most talented songwriters. He also has a golden voice.
This song is big, my problem: don’t ask me about lyrics.

I didn’t understand few of the words and I had some help from my old man. I think we lost the finest artist, Abraham. Never the less let me share it with you.

          Nitrikay;

I’m terribly bad when it comes to lyrics; but not this. I love this song, nitrikay, thanks. Definitely, the man had his own style and signature. He was always hopeful. It’s a big loss. Thanks for sharing the lyrics, here is the song.

Nitricc, Mahmuday and all AA fans:

I think my 2nd complete album review was of Abraham (when Semai came out) and I predicted that he would do to Eritrean music what Teddy Afro did to Ethiopian music. He is the only Eritrean artist I know that girls fainted watching him in concert (that’s Beatles stuff.) He passed away much, much too early.

Speaking of great lyrics, here’s one of my favorite: the kids who covered it produced its lyrics in Geez type (and for those who can’t read Tigrinya, in Latin/English). The song is: Deki Erey: start at the 5:00 minute mark and start your lip syncing! I can visualize him the patented Abraham Afwerki dance: the Dervish Twirl:

            Yes indeed,big Cousin.
For me,this ONE is prob the best one thus far not just the lyric ,the super voice and music but the content wher every bit of Eritrea and Eritreans is mentioned and includedً.
            What a big loss indeed.
That young and Cute Super typo Eritrean beauty added big time spice to the music..as a Coordinator
Mind you, this is a second generation or first gen -not sure how you call them,ri-Am Youth making and doing it in the best way possible!
What a blessing! And I wonder how much a United Eri Youth can achieve when we have an opportunity!
The Sky will be the limit.

It is unfortunate and we are not able to see Eritrean musicians in Ethiopia enjoying with their fans. I love Abraham Afewerki, Helen, Korchach, and others. But the most I listened is the cassette of Sami Birhane. And I think he is the most popular among Ethiopians. Where is he now? God bless him for the nights I enjoyed by his Album called Meadi Beteseb

      Semere Wad Abuye Andom:

First: Sebene might be his mom’s name; but Tefeno’s wife’s name is NOT sebene. Close, but not Sebene.

Second: and now I am hazarding flame wars from Tefeno (because he has a fairly robust social media presence) but there is something about his voice which is, what’s the word… yeah, annoying:)

        Abu Salah:
Thanks. When the people who tutored me in Arabic mad a mistake like I did, they would say “Kluah ala wozen Sebene” I think wozen means rhyming or something like that. Gadi can help but apparently this “Al-Wozen” is big grammatical obssessession in Arabic after its ‘AArib” 😉

About his voice, for some reason I like it in the song I dedicated to you

      • Mahmud Saleh

        Saleh;
To be fair, we haven’t seen the real FiHira after “Romay” When he entered Asmara, he became ተራ ኣዝማሪኖ፡ ኣብ ቤት መስተ ታኒካ እናወቕዐ ስድራኺ እናበለ ምድራፍ ኮይኑ። (Romay werHi wetsiAa bsemay), semere, put off your linguist knife for now. It’s a great song…Romaay!

          • saay7

            Hey Sem:

They went back to “sefir”(Arabic) for ambassador after they got tired of saying, in Tigrayit, “the person who is delegated to another country by his country.” Even to their tin ears that must have sound like “Fein wuzanek, ya GoHa.”

          • saay7

            Mahmuday:

But that doesn’t solve this problem: “la enaas Ad abuka Andom egl mi gesa?” You have to explain his purpose: to represent. That “Huye iye…kalashno’t keba”…wait, wrong script. Tsere-sewra Semere dma tser-tser keyblena::

            Saay,
I think melhakum kayuda could mean step on it delicately so us not to hurt it, as in afkus abilka regetsa. It could also mean , at you own pace (this one I am not very sure of)

          • Semere Andom

            Hi Sal and Saleh:
I tried to listen to the song to glean the meaning from the context. I think “melhakum” means metaphysical: bmenfesku. I had issues of clarity in my PC, but I think the meaning can be gleaned from the context. Weridwom abey koynom afkisom kregtswa. But we will see what Mahmuday will say

            SGJ:

I know that YOU know it, of course; I was trying to bust the counter-revolutionary (ጸረ ገድሊ) Sem A since he has been getting a big head since Wad Haiget crowned him as honorary Wad Haiget (a place whose location Sem is still trying to identify:)

“eb melhakum kayuda” is, as you said, tread lightly. (Or, in the words of Wedi Tkabo: ታሪኽ ኣለዎ እቲ ጎቦ.) And I just learned about it for the first time from this, which came in handy after I read a lot of insolent language from the usual insolent crowd:

Well, the location of Wed Haiget has been identified sala eti tsinatna tewefayinetna, so your role as a mediating agent is redundant, tetselitshilka aleka:-)

            Hi Sal:
I listed to it again clearly by occasionally calling Haiget and I concur. It is one of those PFDJ songs that is aimed to turn on the guilt switch on us. Yehow , zemetna Mahmuday kelsahineto keba 🙂

    Yay!

Saturday music…… This is dedicated to Rodab for congratulating Auntie Ethiopia and of course Sal, because he just loves Teddy Afro…. 🙂

    • saay7

      Hey Eyobai:

      Questions, questions, questions…

      1. How did Teddy manage to make HSI an iconic figure in a country where the ruling coalition party consider him a villain?

      2. When two African teams are playing and all African teams have the Arengwade-Bcha-Qey colors, how do you tell apart which one is which?

      3. If this is a tribute to Walya, why are all the highlights goal misses? Is that because, until the latest game, they were scoreless?

      Questions, questions, questions…

      🙂 saay

      • Eyob Medhane

        Sal,

        Let me start with Q # 2

There was actually that coincidence in the game between Mali and Ethiopia. For such occasions, we have a second choice jersey, which is plain color, as opposed strip arenguade, bicha, qey..to accommodate the opposing African team…(You can see that on the picture below_

        Q # 1

That is the brilliance of Teddy Afro. He even managed to have the national media to say some nice stuff about his majesty, particularly, if the topic was related to African union. Even PMHD has quoted HSI, during 50th anniversary of the AU/OAU.

        Q#3

Will you stop neat picking? Just enjoy the damn song, man?!

        Something to ponder

When we like some one, WE REALLY LIKE THEM. There is no “in the middle”

Look at the picture, and who is front and center at press conferences with the coach and all…… 🙂

        Whaddya think, huh?! 🙂

        • saay7

          Hey Eyob:

Ummm, let me guess: the Eri-Saudi-Swede-Ethiopian? 🙂 That’s where you are hanging your hat on? Yhunlh. Shiffa ygberelka, as we say back home.

Now, if you want to know why Eritrea will be the face of African cyclists for a few decades, watch this:

          http://www.redbull.com/ch/de/bike/stories/1331627774559/asmawa-full-movie

You get to see Asmara, Keren, road from Asmara to Keren, road from Keren to Barentu, the scenic road from Asmara to Massawa and, of course beautiful Eritreans. But then I am being redundant:)

          saay

          • Eyob Medhane

            Oh Sal,

First of I have NO DOUBT. None what so ever that the future face of African cyclists for few decades will be Eritreans cyclists…That might be difficult to argue. However, I doubt that it will be, because their roads, as we have almost IDENTICAL roads in almost all four corners of the country… Beauty? Whether you like it or not our features is also IDENTICAL…let alone foreigners, even ourselves have sometimes a hard time to tell us apart, who is from which country…So we can compete in that department also pretty fairly… 🙂

Attached is one of the pictures of the similar roads (This one is from Lalibela to Gonder)

And a BBC documentary about dengerous road of the world (the Ethiopian episode) The pictured road is featured starting 35:00 minutes to 36:39 minutes.. (That would be only about a minute and half of your time, besides I thought you said you like BBC documentary 🙂 ) I also urge you to ignore what the two idiots are bubbling about… The documentary has been done some 4 years ago… I couldn’t chop it that is why all these disclaimers… 🙂

I love speed and this will be the ultimate test of driving with fast cars. is there speed limit? if not i guess the only speed limit is your commonsense. i can’t wait to drive over there. a little mistake, you gone. lol i tell you though it will be a place to care race.

wow, it doesn’t even look like in Africa. clean, niceeeee. i know people say Asmara shikor, no make it Shikorina. lol
for future, i would like to leave Asmara alone. no tall building no shiny toothless shopping centers, just live it alone as is and build those things out side Asmara. off course you have to take care the old bulidings but live it alone. so nice.

      Nitrikay abaTereg;
Thank you for that beautiful pic. Now that you tell me you’re a speed-guy, well, get ready. Charge and warm your engine from SarajaQa, gather speed up the hilly plateau of Karneshem, maximum speed to MQlQal Endmichael, and voila!! You fly all the way to Massawa airport. I believe this is SaraJaQa-Felfel-Solomona road. You’re going to miss the scenery though. The alternative is to drive like Semere, you know what I mean, and enjoy semienawi BaHri down to Massawa.

This road shows part of the road between Weki-Zagir (few kilometers away) and up to the road that separates Mirara and Filfil, some few kilometers before you reach “kibetsini” I was working in this project as surveyor but I was stationed in Selemuna. Some of my friends (who were all my classmates, to mention some, Geometra Afewerki, Geometra Weldetinsae, Geometra Bereket, Geometra Yodit, Geometra Daniel, Geometra and now engineer Alamin, were some of the surveyors who started and finished the road construction. Geometra Afewerki later became head of the Surveying section.

The project started in 2000 (first from Selemuna) and later in 2001 full fledged project was started to connect Serejaka and Gahtelay-Shebah road at Metkel-Abet.

Sadly, I participated in the construction of the road that later became an access road to Era-Ero prison center. The road that leads to Era-ero starts from Filfil (Debir Mear) and it continues till Era-Ero. I remember working in that project took us about 25 days and we were ordered suddenly to stop just after reaching that place (it was in last days of August 2001). This was before the arrest of G-15 and 2 years after, I heard that the place was changed to prison center. feel very sad.

Era-Ero during the armed struggle was remembered as a secret place for logistics. there was a milling machine that was working day and night to provide flour to tegadelti.

          tes;
God bless you; you have given us a comprehensive report about that road and its environs. I do have fond memories of these places, may be for another day. Yes, you’re right; Felfel-Solomuna, Menteble, and Eila-Ero would have been places Drue, Petros, Saleh, Sherifo, BeraKi….and the rest would have told different stories about had they not been buried under their ground. Hey Nitricc:

Never mind cars… Are you familiar with Red Bull extreme sports series? Well, they recorded a biker taking the Asmara-Massawa ride on a no-gear bicycle and pedal-reverse to brake. Everybody (including our Eritrean bikers) say he can’t do it on a bike that heavy… but he does.

Check out the video here (34 minutes) : beautiful scenery of Asmara, road to Massawa…

      • Nitricc

SAAY, thanks for sharing. I learned the history of cycling in Eritrea. I know the people are crazy about cycling but I didn’t know it goes way back. Last March there was sport computation among all ethics (Killis) in Ethiopia. It was held in Bahrdar and the Tigryans left every one in the dust when it came to cycling race. So, I think the cycling craze is rubbing the Tigryans too. SAAY, when ever you found that kind of videos please share it. I enjoy watching it. Having said that, that dude is crazy. I consider myself to be daring
but not that; I will never do that in million years. It is very risky and borderline ruthlessness.
        thanks for sharing.

        ንኢሸቶ= tgrayet word? yes.

        ንኢሸቲት= same as weletit “tesQir”

ቃል/ክልመት= same as እቅትሳድ/ሸቀኖት arguments. There were two-sided debate during ghedli. Those who had grown up reading Geez and felt comfortable borrowing from Tigrigna would say any Arabic rooted Tigrayet words were not needed, but those who came from Muslim back ground/or from MetaHt would feel comfortable using Arabic rooted Tigrayet words which had made their way to Tigrayet peacefully long before attempting Tigrayet text books. When EPLF decided to launch the Revolution School in 1976, it gathered few educators in a place later code-named “Zero” because it was situated under a big mountain where the communication center of EPLF , known by the code name “Zero” was located. The curriculum was drafted in Tigrigna and Tigrayet. For Tigrigna, there wasn’t a problem. However, it was for the first time that Tigrayet was to be used in school, prior to this, it had been used in the translation of the Bible, and in some efforts by memhr Musa Aron to publish short stories. Those first teachers of Tigrayet happened to be from Samhar and Sahel, later some teachers came from Sanhit area. For most part, they were handling it well, it was not that standardized, all dialects and a degree of liberty at borrowing words continued. Parallel to this, in 1979, Radio Dimtsi Hafash began its transmission which included Tigrayet. Almost all of Dimtsi Hafash broadcasters were from Mensae, hence more inclined to be purists. However, most of them were veteran fighters (like Naizghi wed Hayghet, a man who was a priceless resource) and were fine with time to tune their translation towards the majority, which means they became relaxed towards using already existing Arabic-rooted political and military terms which had been introduced to Tigrayet peacefully. This had accelerated due to the feedback they were getting from the people. The story is long, but it may help you see your question.

I won’t forgive you for inviting Nitrikay to wayanay song when you know he is deeply proud of his own ghdeli, the greatest ghedli ever! Am I romanticizing? Here is Hamed Abdallah, perhaps, he is one of the best folklore singers of Western Eritrea. Hamed has sung his tribe (The BiniAmr) lavishly; he also sang Eritrean Munadl (tegadalay). When Barka young folks hear finger plucking of the rababh, they grab their sword and enter a jumping-dance feat. And they jump like an antelope. Usually, the occasion is accompanied by traditional coffee which could go for hours. Under the towering Arkokebay tress, if you add a barbecue of a lamb to the celebratory mood, phew! It could not be better. Business contracts are concluded; disputes settled, promises on engagements of their kids are made; war is declared and peace deals hammered…that has been the traditional bayto (parliament) of our people.

I’m bringing this story here because:

a, it shows Gadi how a borrowed word “eltfaf” was Tigrignized as “entlfaf” (yesterday’s exchanges, Saleh)

b, it shows humanity among the chaos of war, for those who can’t read Tigrigna, there is an episode in the story where when Asha was captured wounded by ELF tegadelti, she was almost killed by some of them. But someone from the captors saved her; she talks about those who abused her and about those who really showed her the good side of humanity; she talks why we were killing each other while the enemy was getting ready to wipe us all; she also displays a glimpse of the arogant attitudes of captured tegadelti of that era (all tegadelti regardless of who captured them)….any way, it’s history, for all those who passed through it, it’s indeed painful.

      Dear Mahmuday:

My translation for manawara is “FedaHdaH” or “wedKdeK”.:-)

Yes FenTahTaH is different that FedaHdaH 🙂

Read my response to our dialog, I called it my Al- Mutenbih Al-Tayib moment:-)

Also the correct translation for እንትልፋፍ is mkUlam , not ብጎኒ 🙂

      • Saleh Johar

Hi Semere, I think mkulam is interception through a short-cut.

There is a Kerenite joke about it that I heard from a friend: A teacher uttered the word “akwalimuwo” and the students (who are proficient in Keren Tigrinya) didn’t understand the word and gave the teacher a blank stare. He explained the word. But instead of taking the lesson, they laughed at him: ” ‘ssss, kerifuwo eyo z’bahal.”

Everybody uses the Tigre equivalent “kreffo” in place of the Tigrinya “akwalmmo” which we didn’t know existed by the way.

        • Semere Andom

          Hi Abu Salah thanks.
Oh this is the “Krefo” story that you were supposed to tell me for a long time;-) when Sal and I talked about Kerenite and PFDJ Tigriniya. It is very funny. This is a good example how language evolves. A friend of mine, a cross between Asmarino and Kerenite once asked me abbey “tengogi nerak” you came late to the library yesterday, we laughed and now almost 20 years my friends, who heard about Tigrayit in Greece ad Italy use dongekim do abti endina angogina 🙂

          • Saleh Johar

Semere, I don’t think even Mahmuday understand this, I used it several times and I get funnier translations.

Try to translate this into proper Tigrinya or English,… or even Tigrayet:

ነታ ኮበሪት ናብቲ ብና ምት ሸኪዐያ ፍራራይ ተጠሊቀ፡ ሰረፍሪፈት ኮይነ፤ ሸዓኣ ወረአኹኻ ሕስርካ ወይገበርኩን!

ነታ ኮበሪት ናብቲ ብና ምት ሸኪዐያ ፍራራይ ተጠሊቀ፡ no clue

I’m away from Geez, but for now suffice to say “bezi agaTami negeru wegEi lebisu malet eyu.” but what about “manawera”? I think I confused your word “fendaHdaH” with fenTaHTaH” not sure. Need a feedback on that.

    Saturday music!

    Sal,

      Selamat Eyobai:

This music style is called Funkadelic and its king was George Clinton. (With occasional appearances by James Brown.) it never was my thing but some people can’t move from the dance floor when funk is on.

There was an Amharic funk song I heard years ago: probably the only one in the world where the music is funk and the lyrics are ethio nationalist about arbegna ethiopiawi and his abyot:)

You can confirm the rumor with the TPLF romantics in this forum whether their front liquidated him. Rumors and hyperboles about our fronts never stopped you from passing judgement 🙂

And what happened today in the world of Futball?

        Sal,

Don’t ask about today’s football…I am still fuming about it…Trying to search the reason…wait…could it be because we had an Eritrea-Swedish-Saudi dude joined the team?!

The rumor of Tesfaye Gebre’s death has a lot to do with his place of death (Bologna, Italy in 1985) and his heritage (Half Eritrean) and the curcumstances, which he died… (went to visit Eritrean friend in Bologna and found dead of mysterious explanation that was later ruled ‘suicide’……I was told that there were some people in Italy, where he lived for most of his life threatning him for being a derg supporter….. (Sigh) crazy times… 🙂

I got another song for you from him (May be that’s what that got him killed 🙂

          Meanwhile:

“The defeat leaves Ethiopia rooted to the bottom of group B with no points. Ethiopia were defeated by Algeria and then Malawi, before Mali piled further misery on coach Mariano Barreto and his troop.”

Why are you blaming the confused Eritrean-Saudi-Swede player for your loss. It appears that your current football team sucks without his help:)

            Sal,

It turns out, Walid Atta is the best thing that happened to the team, according to this report.

Again, I think you should forward your recommendation letter about me replacing Amin Abdulqadir, as a tourism minister to Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. Do you need the address? 🙂

I am not done with my touristic promotion featuring Tesfaye Gebre, but this would be my last, for this weekend, as ‘music weekend came to close. So you must like this. I demand it…. 🙂

            Eyobai:

Ok, somebody has to say it and it might as well be me.

Children should not sing. It is impossible to judge children’s song: are you reacting to their cuteness or to their singing talent? Too hard to tell, so no singing for children. If you haven’t reached the same conclusion, just go to your children’s talent show where you will soon realize what every father realizes: everybody (except for your child) has no talent. Thank God for iPhones.

            Ha, ha…Sal,
My intention was not for you to listen to that little girl, but the fantastic song of Tesfaye Gebre’s Addis Ababa. But her rendition of the same song for some reason was mixed with the video…She did a good job, though…. Anyway, oh yeah…believe me, I know what you’re talkin’ about. I have been to those children ‘talent’ shows…..Ooooooooh the horror… 🙂

P.S Did you read the Ethiopian press singing the praise of Walid Atta? See how much we love you 😉
